Michelangelo 550: la Prudenza che vigila sulla sobrietà
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, voglio proporvi il dipinto a olio su parete in cui Matteo Rosselli raffigurò ‘La prudenza vigila sulla sobrietà di Michelangelo’.
Il dipinto, commissionato all’artista dal mio pronipote Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane, venne realizzato nel 1628.
Il Rosselli volle raffigurarmi a monocromo mentre ero intento a scrivere lettere, ispirato dalla figura della Prudenza con tanto di specchio e serpente.
Al centro della scena ci sono io seduto al tavolo di legno che scrivo lettere. Con un cappello in testa e un’età sulle spalle che sembra avanzata, sono concentrato su ciò che sto facendo mentre l’allegoria della Prudenza si guarda nello specchio, sulla sinistra.
Fuori dalla porta due uomini discutono, sotto il vigile sguardo del cane, simbolo di fedeltà.
Esiste un dipinto che ha molte affinità con questo ed è quello di San Girolamo che venne realizzato nello studio del Cigoli, commissionato per la chiesa di San Giovanni dei Fiorentini a Roma.
Mentre nell’opera romana sono presenti le tre virtù teologali che ispirano San Girolamo nelle sue scritture, in quella fiorentina è la Prudenza ad affiancare me.
Se volete ammirare quest’opera non vi rimane altro da fare che andare a Casa Buonarroti a Firenze.

Michelangelo 550: Prudence watches over my sobriety
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I want to show you the oil painting on the wall in which Matteo Rosselli depicted ‘Prudence watches over Michelangelo’s sobriety’.
The painting, commissioned to the artist by my great-grandson Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, was made in 1628.
Rosselli wanted to depict me in monochrome while I was busy writing letters, inspired by the figure of Prudence complete with mirror and snake.
At the center of the scene there is me sitting at the wooden table writing letters. With a hat on my head and an age on my shoulders that seems advanced, I am focused on what I am doing while the allegory of Prudence looks at herself in the mirror, on the left.
Outside the door two men are arguing, under the watchful gaze of the dog, symbol of loyalty.
There is a painting that has many affinities with this one and it is that of Saint Jerome that was made in Cigoli’s studio, commissioned for the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome. While in the Roman work there are the three theological virtues that inspire Saint Jerome in his writings, in the Florentine one it is Prudence that stands beside me.
