Michelangelo 550: Io dipinto da Francisco de Hollanda
In occasione dell’anno in cui si celebra l’anniversario del mio 550 compleanno, voglio proporvi il dipinto che mi ritrae, realizzato da Francisco de Hollanda.
Si tratta di un prezioso acquerello custodito nell’archivio di Casa Buonarroti che mi mostra in una veste più domestica e meno idealizzata rispetto ad altri ritratti che vi ho mostrato fino al momento.
All’epoca avevo più di sessant’anni e se chiudete gli occhi, con quel cappello nero di feltro di lana e avvolto nel cappotto nero, mi rivedrete nella Chiesa di San Silvestro dove ero solito conversare con Vittoria Colonna.
Parte di quelle conversazioni furono trascritte proprio da Francisco de Hollanda, il pittore portoghese che all’epoca aveva ventun anni.
Sapete, ancora oggi è assai problematico determinare con esattezza il periodo in cui avvennero gli incontri fra me e Francisco de Hollanda, riportati poi dallo stesso nel libro “Dialoghi con Francisco de Hollanda”.
Le proposte di datazione oscillano fra il 1538 e il 1539 anche perché lo stesso Francisco contribuì a confondere le idee ai posteri.
Il giovane artista portoghese mise quei colloqui su carta per dare risalto alla teoria artistica ma non era sua intenzione fare una cronaca dettagliata di quegli incontri.
I Dialoghi furono scritti circa dieci anni dopo il periodo romano di Francisco e descrivono i quattro incontri che l’artista ebbe con me nel giro di poche settimane.

Michelangelo 550: I painted by Francisco de Hollanda
On the occasion of the year in which the anniversary of my 550th birthday is celebrated, I want to propose to you the painting that portrays me, made by Francisco de Hollanda.
It is a precious watercolor kept in the archive of Casa Buonarroti that shows me in a more domestic and less idealized guise than other portraits that I have shown you up to now.
At the time I was over sixty years old and if you close your eyes, with that black wool felt hat and wrapped in the black coat, you will see me again in the Church of San Silvestro where I used to converse with Vittoria Colonna.
Part of those conversations were transcribed by Francisco de Hollanda himself, the Portuguese painter who was twenty-one at the time.
You know, even today it is very difficult to determine exactly the period in which the meetings between me and Francisco de Hollanda took place, later reported by the same in the book “Dialogues with Francisco de Hollanda”.
Dating proposals oscillate between 1538 and 1539 also because Francisco himself contributed to confusing ideas for posterity.
The young Portuguese artist put those conversations on paper to highlight artistic theory but it was not his intention to make a detailed chronicle of those meetings.
The Dialogues were written about ten years after Francisco’s Roman period and describe the four meetings that the artist had with me in the space of a few weeks.
