Michelangelo 550: le Quattro Arti che mi incoronano
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, voglio parlarvi del dipinto ‘Le Quattro Arti incoronano Michelangelo’, realizzato da Sigismondo Coccapani.
Oggi il nome di questo artista è sconosciuto ai più ma le sue opere nel Seicento erano particolarmente apprezzate. Fu uno degli allievi più promettenti del Cigoli e fu anche un abile architetto tanto da lasciare ai posteri un interessante trattato di ingegneria idraulica.
Il dipinto a olio su tela di Coccapani è incastonato nel soffitto della Galleria di Casa Buonarroti.
Il complesso programma decorativo di tale sala assieme a quello della Camera della notte e del dì, Camera degli Angioli e lo Studio, venne ideato dal mio pronipote Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane, figliolo di Lionardo.
La personificazione della Pittura, dell’Architettura, Scultura e Poesia mi incoronano. La Scultura a seno scoperto stringe in una mano una piccola scultura mentre la poesia stringe un capotasto.
Dalla parte opposta si vede la pittura con la bizzarra acconciatura con trecce e piume che richiama in parte un mio cosiddetto presentation drawing, sostiene un libro aperto con il disegno di una Sibilla.
La Scultura, l’unica arte che non ha una corona da pormi sul capo, indossa una veste rossa e tiene con la mano sinistra un attrezzo del mestiere.
Guardate immediatamente sopra il mio capo che sta per essere coronato: dal cielo sta scendendo una luce divina. Sul libro aperto tenuto dalla Pittura invece si leggono parole di lodi a me dedicate.
Sigismondo Coccapani realizzò su commissione di Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane questo dipinto a olio su tela, tra il 1615 e il 1517.

Michelangelo 550: The Four Arts that crown me
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I want to talk to you about the painting ‘The Four Arts crown Michelangelo’, created by Sigismondo Coccapani.
Today the name of this artist is unknown to most but his works in the seventeenth century were particularly appreciated. He was one of Cigoli’s most promising students and was also a skilled architect, so much so that he left an interesting treatise on hydraulic engineering to posterity.
Coccapani’s oil painting on canvas is set in the ceiling of the Gallery of Casa Buonarroti.
The complex decorative program of this room together with that of the Chamber of Night and Day, the Chamber of Angels and the Study, was designed by my great-grandson Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, son of Lionardo.
The personification of Painting, Architecture, Sculpture and Poetry crown me. The bare-breasted Sculpture holds a small sculpture in one hand while Poetry holds a capotasto.
On the opposite side you can see the painting with the bizarre hairstyle with braids and feathers that partly recalls one of my so-called presentation drawings, holding an open book with the drawing of a Sibyl.
Sculpture, the only art that does not have a crown to put on my head, wears a red robe and holds a tool of the trade in her left hand.
Look immediately above my head that is about to be crowned: a divine light is descending from the sky. On the open book held by Painting instead you can read words of praise dedicated to me.
Sigismondo Coccapani made this oil painting on canvas on commission from Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, between 1615 and 1517.
