Castel Gandolfo: due capolavori per la Pasqua
Saranno due le opere esposte a Castel Gandolfo in occasione della Pasqua: il Compianto sul Cristo morto di Giovanni Bellini e il Cristo morto sorretto da angeli di Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, più noto come il Sodoma.
Il dipinto del Bellini è stato concesso in prestito dalla Venerabile Arciconfraternita di Santa Maria dell’Orto di Roma mentre quello del Sodoma proviene dalla Pinacoteca Vaticana.
A partire da sabato 5 aprile 2025, i visitatori potranno ammirare i due capolavori nel Palazzo Apostolico di Castel Gandolfo. L’iniziativa è stata promossa dai Musei Vaticani e curata dal Reparto per l’Arte dei secoli XV-XVI.
Le opere sono entrambe dedicate alla meditazione sul corpo esanime di Cristo e invitano a riflessioni teologiche sulla Passione di Cristo.
Il Compianto sul Cristo morto del Bellini
Il Compianto sul Cristo morto di Giovanni Bellini, cimasa superstite dell’antica pala di San Francesco a Pesaro risalente al 1475 circa, venne trafugata dalle truppe napoleoniche.
Il capolavoro da poco è stato sottoposto a un accurato restauro condotto nei laboratori vaticani che è riuscito a restituire al dipinto la migliore leggibilità possibile. Il dipinto commuove per il gesto struggente di Maria Maddalena che dentro il sepolcro unge le ferite del Cristo con un mirabile intreccio di mani.
Il Cristo morto sorretto da angeli del Sodoma
Il dipinto del Bellini sarà affiancato da quello del Sodoma che ha per tema il Cristo morto sorretto da angeli, realizzato attorno al 1505 nel momento della sua maturità artistica, dopo il periodo milanese.
Anche in questo caso, il dipinto è stato restaurato in precedenza dai laboratori dei Musei Vaticani.
L’opera raffigura una meditazione dolente ma luminosa sul corpo di Cristo, sostenuto da quattro angeli. La composizione complessiva suscita una grande intensità emotiva.
Come visitare la mostra
L’ingresso alla mostra è incluso nel biglietto ordinario del Palazzo Papale di Castel Gandolfo. I due dipinti sono accompagnati da pannelli didattici in italiano e in inglese.

Castel Gandolfo: two works for Easter
There will be two works on display in Castel Gandolfo for Easter: the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Giovanni Bellini and the Dead Christ Supported by Angels by Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, better known as Sodoma.
The painting by Bellini was loaned by the Venerable Archconfraternity of Santa Maria dell’Orto in Rome while the one by Sodoma comes from the Pinacoteca Vaticana.
Starting from Saturday 5 April 2025, visitors will be able to admire the two masterpieces in the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo. The initiative was promoted by the Vatican Museums and curated by the Department for Art of the 15th-16th Centuries.
The works are both dedicated to meditation on the lifeless body of Christ and invite theological reflections on the Passion of Christ.
The Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Bellini
The Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Giovanni Bellini, the surviving cymatium of the ancient altarpiece of San Francesco in Pesaro dating back to around 1475, was stolen by Napoleonic troops.
It returned thanks to the precious mediation of Antonio Canova and was then placed in the Vatican Pinacoteca starting in 1820.
The masterpiece has recently undergone a careful restoration carried out in the Vatican laboratories which managed to restore the painting to the best possible readability. The painting is moving for the poignant gesture of Mary Magdalene who inside the tomb anoints the wounds of Christ with a wonderful intertwining of hands.
The Dead Christ Supported by Angels by Sodoma
The painting by Bellini will be accompanied by that of Sodoma which has as its theme the Dead Christ Supported by Angels, created around 1505 at the moment of his artistic maturity, after the Milanese period.
Again, the painting was previously restored by the laboratories of the Vatican Museums.
The work depicts a painful but luminous meditation on the body of Christ, supported by four angels. The overall composition arouses great emotional intensity.
How to visit the exhibition
Admission to the exhibition is included in the ordinary ticket of the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo. The two paintings are accompanied by educational panels in Italian and English.
