Michelangelo 550: io alle cave dipinto da Puccinelli
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, vi propongo il dipinto a olio su tela che ritrae me intento a cercare i marmi che necessitavo per le mie opere alle cave di Carrara, realizzato nel 1864 da Antonio Puccinelli.
L’artista volle rendermi omaggio con quest’opera in occasione del terzo centenario dalla mia morte, avvenuta a Roma il 18 febbraio del 1564.
In piedi e con il berretto calzato sul capo, osservo i marmi della montagna, toccandoli con la mano destra. Nell’altra tengo uno scalpello mentre a terra si vedono un mazzuolo, un compasso e un brogliaccio.
Sullo sfondo si intravedono dei cavatori al lavoro e poco dietro di me altri due uomini seduti a conversare.
La prima volta che arrivai sulle cave di Carrara per cercar marmi fu quando ebbi la necessità di cercare un blocco senza difetti per dar forma alla Pietà Vaticana.
Tornai tredici volte su quelle vette nel corso della vita e, oramai, quelle terre avevo iniziato a conoscerle bene.
Il dipinto a olio è diventato proprietà del Comune di Carrara nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento e oggi appartiene alle collezioni del Museo Carmi di Carrara.

Michelangelo 550: me at the quarries painted by Puccinelli
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I propose the oil painting on canvas that portrays me intent on searching for the marbles I needed for my works at the quarries of Carrara, made in 1864 by Antonio Puccinelli.
The artist wanted to pay homage to me with this work on the occasion of the third centenary of my death, which occurred in Rome on February 18, 1564.
Standing and with my cap on my head, I observe the marbles of the mountain, touching them with my right hand. In the other I hold a chisel while on the ground you can see a mallet, a compass and a rough draft.
In the background you can see some quarrymen at work and a little behind me two other men sitting and talking.
The first time I came to the Carrara quarries to look for marble was when I needed to find a flawless block to shape the Vatican Pietà. I returned to those peaks thirteen times in my life and by then I had begun to know those lands well.
The oil painting became the property of the Municipality of Carrara in the second half of the nineteenth century and today belongs to the collections of the Carmi Museum in Carrara.
