Michelangelo 550: scelto per fare la pubblicità al cioccolato
Avreste mai pensato la mia immagine potesse essere usata per pubblicizzare il cioccolato? Ebbene sì.
Come sapete, in occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, ho aperto questa rubrica in cui vi propongo dipinti, litografie, sculture e immagini che abbiano me come protagonista.
Il disegno che vi propongo fu realizzato per promuovere l’antica cioccolateria d’Aiguebelle, situata nel dipartimento della Drôme, in Francia.
Dovete sapere che quella cioccolateria fu creata dai monaci trappisti del Monastero di Notre Dame d’Aiguebelle. Per promuoverla, alla fine dell’ottocento, i monaci decisero di accostare i loro prodotti di qualità a immagini che riproducessero personaggi celebri del passato.
Nel disegno a me dedicato viene raccontata la storia del Fauno Sdentato.
Lo scolpii quando ancora ero un ragazzino nel Giardino di San Marco di Lorenzo il Magnifico, dove iniziai ad apprender i primi rudimenti assieme ad altri giovani talenti.
In realtà il mio Fauno in origine aveva una bella dentatura da sfoggiare. Però, mentre ero tutt’intento a rifinirlo, passò di lì il Magnifico e mi fece qualche giusta osservazione: “Come mai ha tutti quei denti? I vecchi son quasi sempre sdentati!”. Aveva ragione eccome!
Così, con un po’ di pazienza, gli scalpellai via tutta la dentatura e mi preoccupai di lasciare anche i buchi lasciati dalle radici.
Di questa Testa di Fauno si hanno notizie fino allo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale quando, insieme ad altre opere, venne portata nel Castello di Poppi, nel Casentino, per essere sottratta dalle rapaci mani dei nazisti.
Gli ufficiali delle SS della 305° divisione però riuscirono a entrare con un espediente, riuscendo a portar via non solo il mio Fauno, ma anche molte altre preziose opere. Caricarono il maltolto su un furgoncino e sparirono, proteggendosi le spalle con raffiche di fuoco.
Quanta storia in quella che è una pubblicità per una storica cioccolateria, oggi non più esistente.

Michelangelo 550: chosen to advertise chocolate
Would you have ever thought my image could be used to advertise chocolate? Well, yes.
As you know, on the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I opened this column in which I propose paintings, lithographs, sculptures and images that have me as the protagonist.
The drawing that I propose was created to promote the ancient chocolate factory of Aiguebelle, located in the department of Drôme, in France.
You should know that that chocolate factory was created by the Trappist monks of the Monastery of Notre Dame d’Aiguebelle. To promote it, at the end of the nineteenth century, the monks decided to combine their quality products with images that reproduced famous people from the past.
The drawing dedicated to me tells the story of the Toothless Faun.
I sculpted it when I was still a boy in the Garden of San Marco of Lorenzo the Magnificent, where I began to learn the basics together with other young talents.
In reality, my Faun originally had a nice set of teeth to show off. However, while I was busy finishing it, the Magnificent passed by and made some right observations: “Why does he have all those teeth? Old people are almost always toothless!”. He was right!
So, with a little patience, I chiseled away all the teeth and took care to leave the holes left by the roots as well.
There is no news of this Head of a Faun until the outbreak of the Second World War when, together with other works, it was taken to the Castle of Poppi, in Casentino, to be saved from the rapacious hands of the Nazis.
The SS officers of the 305th division, however, managed to get in with a trick, managing to take away not only my Faun, but also many other precious works. They loaded the stolen goods onto a van and disappeared, protecting their backs with bursts of fire.
So much history in what is an advertisement for a historic chocolate shop, which no longer exists today.
