Il David e gli attrezzi che usai per scolpirlo
Vi siete mai chiesti quali strumenti adoperassi per scolpire?
Gli attrezzi del mestiere usati sono rintracciabili leggendo i segni che lasciarono sul marmo. Sedetevi comodi che vi racconto anche questa particolarità.
Durante la campagna diagnostica condotta sul David nel 2003, in vista del restauro effettuato da Cinzia Parnigoni, sul David sono stati numerosi segni che lasciai con i diversi attrezzi mentre lo scolpivo.
Tra questi la subbia da taglio per ricavare i vari spessori nel blocco di marmo di Carrara, adoperata per il taglio a calata, spesso usato da cavatori e scalpellini dai quali probabilmente ebbi modo di apprenderlo.
Invece, per modellare i volumi, usai l’ugnetto, il dente di cane e le gradine a due, tre e cinque punte, arrivando così fino alla pelle più superficiale del David.
Lasciai anche tracce del trapano e bulino nella capigliatura e nella peluria del pube.
Osservando da vicino la superficie del corpo del David e mettendola a confronto con quella della fionda o del broncone (il tronco che aiuta a scaricare il peso a terra posizionato dietro la gamba destra), vi renderete conto che trattai il marmo in modo molto diverso.
Mentre il corpo del futuro Re d’Israele è ben levigato, le altre parti citate sono molto più ruvide. Lo feci per creare un gioco di luci e ombre ma non solo. Un tempo sia il broncone che la fionda erano dorati. Per poter applicare l’oro in un secondo momento infatti, era necessario rendere la superficie un po’ più ruvida.
Oggi anche la parte più alta delle spalle, la mano sinistra e la chioma hanno un aspetto poroso, meno lucidato. Quello non fu un effetto intenzionale.
È l’effetto dell’erosione degli agenti atmosferici che per secoli si sono accaniti sul David, collocato sull’arengario di Palazzo Vecchio nel 1504 e rimosso nell’estate del 1873.

The David and the tools I used to sculpt it
During the diagnostic campaign conducted on the David in 2003, in view of the restoration carried out by Cinzia Parnigoni, there were numerous marks on the David that I left with the various tools while I was sculpting it.
Among these, the cutting subbia to obtain the various thicknesses in the block of Carrara marble, used for the drop cut, often used by quarrymen and stonecutters from whom I probably had the opportunity to learn it.
Instead, to model the volumes, I used the nail, the dog tooth and the two-, three- and five-pointed chisels, thus reaching the most superficial skin of the David.
I also left traces of the drill and burin in the hair and pubic hair.
If you look closely at the surface of David’s body and compare it to that of the sling or the broncone (the trunk that helps to unload the weight on the ground positioned behind the right leg), you will realize that I treated the marble differently.
While the body of the future King of Israel is well polished, the other parts mentioned are much rougher. I did this to create a play of light and shadow but not only. Once both the broncone and the sling were gilded and in order to apply the gold it was necessary to make the surface a little rougher.
Today even the highest part of the shoulders, the left hand and the hair have a porous, less polished appearance. That was not an intentional effect but is caused by the erosion of atmospheric agents that for centuries have raged on the David, placed on the Arengario of Palazzo Vecchio in 1504 and removed in the summer of 1873.
