13 marzo 1508: a 33 anni divenni maggiorenne
Era il 13 marzo del 1508 quando finalmente diventai maggiorenne.
Avevo 33 anni. Lo so che la cosa può sembrarvi strana e paradossale ma nel Cinquecento la burocrazia era assai diversa da quella di oggi.
Era infatti il padre a decidere quando un figlio poteva diventare indipendente e il mio, fino a quell’età pensava non lo fossi abbastanza, nonostante avessi già guadagnato non pochi danari e il mio nome fosse noto in tutte le corti d’Europa.
Nel 1508 avevo già scolpito la Madonna della Scala e la Battaglia dei Centauri a Firenze, poi a Roma il Bacco e la Pietà Vaticana e ancora il David, il Tondo Taddei e il Pitti, la Madonna di Bruges, il San Matteo, avevo dipinto il Tondo Doni.
Papa Giulio II già mi aveva commissionato la sua grandiosa sepoltura e di lì a qualche mese avrei iniziato ad affrescare la volta della Cappella Sistina.
Ogni padre decideva però a proprio piacimento e concedeva ai figli l’emancipazione facendo ottenere la piena indipendenza giuridica quando volevano, senza regole.
Non esisteva una legge che regolasse la questione dell’indipendenza e i padri erano soliti concedere l’emancipazione quando si rendevano conto che i figlioli erano in grado di camminare con le proprie gambe e potevano cavarsela da soli.
Il fatto è che era il mi babbo Lodovico a non sapersela cavare senza di me, non certo il contrario. Finalmente, a 33 anni compiuti, si decise a concedermi l’indipendenza giuridica che ai vostri tempo corrisponde al raggiungimento della maggiore età.
Non fui certo il solo a ottenere l’autonomia a quell’età. Il mi fratello Buonarroto, più giovane di me, l’ebbe ancora più tardi ma ci sono altri personaggi noti come per esempio il Domenico Ghirlandaio al quale fu concessa a 35 anni.

It was March 13, 1508 when I finally came of age. I was 33. I know that this may seem strange and paradoxical to you, but in the sixteenth century, bureaucracy was very different from today.

I was certainly not the only one to obtain autonomy at that age. My brother Buonarroto, younger than me, had it even later, but there are other well-known figures such as Domenico Ghirlandaio, who was granted it at 35.
