Michelangelo 550: io che assisto l’Urbino nell’incisione di Haghe
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, vi propongo una bellissima incisione che mi raffigura seduto al capezzale del mio assistente e carissimo amico Urbino, oramai molto malato.
L’opera fu realizzata nel 1848 dall’artista olandese poi naturalizzato britannico Louis Haghe. Volle ritrarmi mentre, seduto al capezzale dell’Urbino, al secolo Francesco Amadori, lo assistevo nell’ultimo periodo della sua esistenza.
L’Urbino dopo mesi di malattia, passò a miglior vita il 3 gennaio del 1556. Aveva lavorato con me per 26 anni consecutivi e da lungi viveva a casa mia a Macel de’ Corvi, come se fosse un figlio.
Quando si sposò, mi feci carico di dargli il denaro sufficiente per costruire uno spazio a suo gusto per accogliere la nuova famiglia. Suo figlio che battezzò col nome di Michelangelo in mio onore, nacque fra le mura di casa.
Prima di morire m’aveva nominato esecutore testamentario e tutore dei figli suoi. Non avevo la vocazione del padre ma mi preoccupai sempre non abbisognassero di nulla. La vedova che fino al momento viveva a casa mia con i due figli, dopo la morte del marito tornò a Urbino, in terra natìa.
Per tutta la vita mi feci carico di ogni loro spesa o necessità, provvedendo a tutto ciò che la famiglia del mio amato servitore e amico aveva bisogno.
Haghe mi disegnò mentre l’Urbino mi stringe la mano, tenendola tra le sue. Sulle mie ginocchia si vede una tavola con sopra degli studi da completare.
Sul tavolo vicino in legno massello si intravede un modello mentre sotto al piede destro ho dei libri. Il comodino in primo piano è affiancato da una brocca mentre sopra il piano d’appoggio si distinguono nettamente la scodella, una bottiglietta e una clessidra, allegoria del tempo che scorre senza rimedio.
Fu un tema ricorrente quello di mostrarmi mentre mi prendo cura dell’Urbino, soprattutto nell’arte ottocentesca.
Esistono infatti diversi dipinti e incisioni che mi ritraggono mentre mi prendo cura dell’Urbino. Basti pensare per esempio all’opera più celebre sul tema, realizzata nel 1862 dall’artista preraffaellita Frederic Leighton per avere un’idea.
Il fatto che mi fossi dedicato così tanto alla cura di quello che fino a poco tempo prima era il mio braccio destro fu visto come un atto di umana carità che mostrava di me un lato non così raccontato fino all’Ottocento.

Michelangelo 550: I assist Urbino in Haghe’s engraving
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I propose a beautiful engraving that depicts me while I take care of my assistant and dear friend Urbino who was now very ill.
The work was created in 1848 by the Dutch artist who later became a naturalized British citizen, Louis Haghe. He wanted to portray me while, sitting at the bedside of Urbino, born Francesco Amadori, I assisted him in the last period of his existence.
After months of illness, Urbino passed away on January 3, 1556. He had worked with me for 26 consecutive years and had been living in my house in Macel de’ Corvi for a long time, as if he were a son.
When he got married, I took it upon myself to give him enough money to build a space to his liking to welcome the new family. His son, whom he baptized with the name Michelangelo in my honor, was born within the walls of the house.
Before he died he had appointed me executor and guardian of his children. I did not have the vocation of his father but I always worried that they did not need anything. The widow who until then had lived in my house with her two children, after the death of her husband returned to Urbino, to her native land.
Throughout my life I took care of all their expenses or needs, taking care of the entire family of my beloved servant and friend.
Haghe drew me while Urbino squeezes my hand, holding it between his. I have a table on my knees with some studies to complete on it.
On the nearby table you can see a model while under my right foot I have some books. The bedside table in the foreground is flanked by a jug while on the support surface you can clearly see a bowl, a small bottle and an hourglass, an allegory of time that passes without remedy.
It was a recurring theme to show me taking care of Urbino, especially in 19th-century art. In fact, there are several paintings and engravings that portray me taking care of Urbino. Just think for example of the most famous work on the subject, made in 1862 by the pre-Raphaelite artist Frederic Leighton to get an idea.
The fact that I had dedicated myself so much to the care of what until recently had been my right arm was seen as an act of human charity that showed a side of me that had not been so well-reported until the 19th century.
