31 gennaio: la Festa dei Doni. Coppie agli Uffizi con un solo biglietto
Il 31 gennaio del lontano 1504, Agnolo Doni e Maddalena Strozzi convolarono a nozze. Lui facoltoso mercante di stoffe e lei, membro della famiglia di banchieri più importante della città, dopo i Medici, si unirono in matrimonio.
Dopo le nozze, i coniugi commissionarono a me la Sacra Famiglia, il celebre Tondo Doni. Molto più probabile che realizzai quel lavoro non in occasione del loro matrimonio ma successivamente, in concomitanza della nascita o del battesimo della tanto attesa figlia Maria.
A Raffaello invece i coniugi vollero commissionare i propri ritratti che sembra che guardino negli occhi i visitatori che ogni giorni entrano nella sala degli Uffizi che li custodisce.
In concomitanza con la ricorrenza di quel matrimonio, il 31 gennaio le Gallerie degli Uffizi offrono un biglietto gratuito a tutte le coppie che varcheranno le soglie dei musei per visitare le prestigiose collezioni.
“Il Giorno dei Doni è il San Valentino degli Uffizi: una bellissima festa con cui il museo celebra un’unione d’amore iconica, quella che, oltre mezzo millennio fa, portò alla creazione di uno dei tesori della Galleria, il Tondo Doni di Michelangelo – afferma Simone Verde, direttore degli Uffizi – invito tutte le coppie, tutti gli innamorati, a venire in museo da noi per prendere parte a questa giornata e suggellarla magicamente, al cospetto di uno dei capolavori dell’arte occidentale”.
Un San Valentino sui generis considerando che quel matrimonio poco ha a che fare con l’amore ma molto con l’interesse. Agnolo Doni infatti, imparentandosi con la potente dinastia dei banchieri Strozzi, ambiva a far acquisire ancora più prestigio alla propria discendenza.

January 31: the Feast of Doni. Couples at the Uffizi with a single ticket
On January 31, 1504, Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi got married. He was a wealthy cloth merchant and she was a member of the most important banking family in the city, after the Medici, and they got married.
After the wedding, the couple commissioned me to paint the Holy Family, the famous Doni Tondo. It is much more likely that I did that work not on the occasion of their wedding but later, to coincide with the birth or baptism of their long-awaited daughter Maria.
Instead, the couple wanted to commission Raphael to paint their portraits that seem to look into the eyes of the visitors who enter the Uffizi gallery that houses them every day.
In conjunction with the anniversary of that wedding, on January 31st the Uffizi Galleries are offering a free ticket to all couples who will cross the threshold of the museums to visit the prestigious collections.
“The Day of Doni is the Valentine’s Day of the Uffizi: a beautiful celebration with which the museum celebrates an iconic union of love, the one that, over half a millennium ago, led to the creation of one of the treasures of the Gallery, Michelangelo’s Tondo Doni – says Simone Verde, director of the Uffizi – I invite all couples, all lovers, to come to the museum to take part in this day and magically seal it, in the presence of one of the masterpieces of Western art”.
A Valentine’s Day sui generis considering that that wedding has little to do with love but a lot to do with interest. In fact, Agnolo Doni, by marrying into the powerful Strozzi banking dynasty, aspired to make his descendants acquire even more prestige.
