L’opera che vi propongo oggi, in occasione dell’Epifania, è la raffinata Adorazione dei Magi dipinta a tempera su tavola di pioppo dal Beato Angelico, approssimativamente tra il 1440 e il 1460.

L’opera, nota anche come Tondo Cook, è caratterizzata da colori brillanti e narra l’arrivo dei Re Magi al cospetto di Gesù Bambino assieme alla loro corte.

Il dipinto viene citato in un inventario appartenente a Lorenzo il Magnifico risalente al suo anno di morte, il 1492. Fu definito come il più prezioso della potente casata fiorentina e attribuito in tale circostanza al Beato Angelico.

Gli esperti però hanno identificato nell’opera due mani differenti: Fra Angelico potrebbe infatti aver solo iniziato a dipingere la tavola, portata a termine successivamente da Filippo Lippi.

I colori sgargianti sono una delle prime cose che si notano di questo dipinto. Osservate quanta cura l’artista dedicò non solo alle espressioni dei volti dei vari personaggi che si muovono sulla scena ma anche alla resa dei ricami dorati che impreziosiscono gli abiti.

I tre Re Magi si trovano dinanzi al Bambino e indossano rispettivamente un abito rosa, uno celeste e l’altro rosso. Quello che sembra più giovane, di celeste vestito, ha una complessa acconciatura che culmina con una treccia. Tutti hanno il capo coronato con delle perle che li fa distinguere a colpo d’occhio dal corteo che li segue.

Il pavone sul tetto, elemento allegorico che spesso si ritrova proprio nelle natività del Quattrocento e del secolo successivo, rappresenta l’immortalità mentre il cane in primo piano la fedeltà.

L’opera probabilmente fu commissionata al Beato Angelico da un membro della famiglia Medici e lo ebbe in eredità Lorenzo il Magnifico.

Il tondo appartiene alla National Gallery of Art di Washington.

Epiphany: The Adoration of the Magi by Beato Angelico

The work I propose to you today, on the occasion of the Epiphany, is the refined Adoration of the Magi painted in tempera on poplar wood by Beato Angelico, approximately between 1440 and 1460.

The work, also known as Tondo Cook, is characterized by bright colors and narrates the arrival of the Three Wise Men in the presence of Baby Jesus together with their court.

The painting is mentioned in an inventory belonging to Lorenzo the Magnificent dating back to the year of his death, 1492. It is defined as the most precious of the powerful Florentine family and is attributed in this circumstance to Beato Angelico.

However, experts have identified two different hands in the work: Fra Angelico could in fact have only begun to paint the panel, later completed by Filippo Lippi.

The bright colors are one of the first things you notice about this painting. Observe how much care the artist dedicated not only to the facial expressions of the various characters moving on the scene but also to the rendering of the golden embroidery of their clothes.

The three Magi are in front of the Child and are wearing a pink dress, a light blue dress and a red dress. The one who seems younger, dressed in light blue, has a complex hairstyle that ends with a braid. They all have their heads crowned with pearls that clearly distinguish them from the procession that follows them.

The peacock on the roof, an allegorical element that is often found in nativities of the fifteenth century and the following century, represents immortality while the dog in the foreground represents fidelity.

The work was probably commissioned to Beato Angelico by a member of the Medici family and was inherited by Lorenzo the Magnificent.

The tondo belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
