Oggi 7 dicembre è il giorno dedicato a Sant’Ambrogio, patrono di Milano. Dottore e Padre della Chiesa. della sua epoca, fu martirizzato nel 397 e la sua effige è stata raffigurata da tanti artisti nel corso dei secoli.

Spesso viene raffigurato con la barba bianca, con la mitra sul capo, il pastorale e con in mano un flagello o uno scudiscio, questi ultimi due attributi simbolo della difesa della fede e della verità. Sant’Ambrogio però non era solo un difensore della dottrina ma figura anche come pastore amorevole, un uomo di cultura e un grande oratore.

 Il ritratto più antico che sia mai stati rinvenuto di Sant’Ambrogio è quello realizzato a mosaico nel complesso della Basilica santambrosiana, a Milano, restaurato da non molto tempo.

Tra le raffigurazioni più note invece vale la pena menzionare il Sant’Ambrogio dipinto dal Bramantino nella pala col la Madonna in Trono, custodita nella Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. La pala d’altare fu realizzata nella prima metà del Cinquecento e mostra la Madonna mentre sta consegnando una palma stilizzata a Sant’Ambrogio, identificabile per la mitria ai suoi piedi e lo staffile appoggiato sul trono mostrato come premio per aver sconfitto l’arianesimo, simboleggiato dal cadavere di Ario.

Mirabile anche il dipinto di Sant’Ambrogio in gloria che realizzò a olio su tela il pittore Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (Milano 1609 – 1662), oggi custodito nel Museo Diocesano di Milano

December 7: Saint Ambrose in the world of art

The oldest portrait of Saint Ambrose ever found is the one made in mosaic in the complex of the Basilica Santambrosiana, in Milan, restored recently.

Among the most famous depictions, it is worth mentioning the Saint Ambrose painted by Bramantino in the altarpiece with the Madonna on the Throne, kept in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. The altarpiece was created in the first half of the sixteenth century and shows the Madonna handing over a stylised palm to Saint Ambrose, identifiable by the mitre at her feet and the whip resting on the throne shown as a reward for having defeated Arianism, symbolised by the corpse of Arius.

Also admirable is the painting of Saint Ambrose in glory, which was made in oil on canvas by the painter Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (Milan 1609 – 1662), now kept in the Diocesan Museum of Milan
