Come ogni anno, Piazza San Pietro nel periodo che precede il Natale, viene resa ancora più bella con l’allestimento del grande abete decorato e del tradizionale presepe che di anno in anno pone l’accento su temi diversi.

Sabato 7 dicembre, alle ore 18.30, verranno inaugurati entrambi dal cardinale Fernando Vérgez Alzaga e da suor Raffaella Petrini, rispettivamente presidente e segretario generale del Governatorato dello Stato della Città del Vaticano.

L’albero scelto per essere presente alla solenne cerimonia di apertura del Giubileo2025 arriva da Ledro, nella diocesi di Trento, mentre il presepe da Grado, città appartenente alla diocesi di Gorizia.

Il presepe

Il presepe arrivato da Grado ha ovviamente come tema centrale la Natività di Cristo ma il filo conduttore che è stato d’ispirazione per gli artigiani che l’hanno ideato è l’amore. Hanno lavorato al progetto circa quaranta persone, tra volontari, artisti e professionisti che sono espressione dell’associazionismo locale.

L’ambientazione è quella della laguna abitata da lungi dai gradesi, noti anche come “casoneri”, perché dimoravano nelle costruzioni fatte di canne note per l’appunto come casoneri.

Proprio all’interno di una di queste tipiche abitazioni lagunari è stata collocata la Natività. Le statue presento nell’installazione sono state realizzate da Lorenzo Boemo e la figlia Francesca Boemo, impregnate del fango lagunare. La scena del presepe è stata ambientata nei primi anni del Novecento.

Il presepe prevede la presenza dell’acqua sopra la quale galleggeranno le caratteristiche imbarcazioni a fondo piatto dette batele, che vengono adoperate per navigare lungo i canali della laguna. Su una spiaggetta ci sarà anche una nonna che sorveglia i nipotini mentre giocano assieme al cane.

Una di queste ‘batele’ sarà condotta da una donna pescatrice e a bordo avrà i Re magi. Così come accade nella realtà, nella laguna ci saranno anche delle ‘briccole’, delle strutture utilizzate per indicare le varie direzioni nella navigazione nautica. Questi segnali indicheranno Aquileia, il Santuario della Incoronata Vergine dell’isola di Barbana, Trieste e Venezia.

L’albero di Natale di 29 metri

Quest’anno l’albero di Natale che verrà acceso il 7 dicembre è un abete alto 29 metri proveniente da Ledro, in Trentino.

La scelta di questo albero non è stata fatta solo per questioni estetiche ma è frutto di una scelta ecologica responsabile. Il taglio dell’albero infatti consentirà di effettuare il naturale ricambio di piante nel bosco certificato Pefc per i prossimi decenni.

La ricrescita annuale dei boschi di Ledro è certificata per 8.260 metri cubi e l’abete prelevato fa parte di uno dei lotti che dovranno essere tagliati per la corretta coltura del bosco.

Il dono dell’albero di Natale per papa Francesco non si limita al solo esemplare di Piazza San Pietro. Associazioni, istituzioni, enti ma anche semplici cittadini anno donato e decorato altri 29 alberi più piccoli provenienti da coltivazioni controllate che saranno collocati in uffici, palazzi e altri ambienti della Santa Sede.

San Pietro: the Nativity Scene of Grado and the Christmas Tree of Ledro

Like every year, Piazza San Pietro in the period preceding Christmas is made even more beautiful with the setting up of the large Christmas tree and the traditional nativity scene that from year to year places the emphasis on different themes.

On Saturday 7 December, at 6:30 pm, both will be inaugurated by Cardinal Fernando Vérgez Alzaga and Sister Raffaella Petrini, respectively president and secretary general of the Governorate of the Vatican City State.

The tree chosen to be present at the solemn opening ceremony of the Jubilee 2025 comes from Ledro, in the diocese of Trento, while the nativity scene from Grado, a city belonging to the diocese of Gorizia.

The nativity scene

The nativity scene that arrived from Grado obviously has the Nativity of Christ as its central theme, but the common thread that inspired the artisans who created it is love. About forty people worked on the project, including volunteers, artists and professionals who are an expression of local associations.

The setting is that of the lagoon inhabited for a long time by the people of Grado, also known as “casoneri”, because they lived in the buildings made of reeds known precisely as casoneri.

The Nativity was placed inside one of these typical lagoon homes. The statues present in the installation were made by Lorenzo Boemo and his daughter Francesca Boemo, soaked in lagoon mud. The nativity scene was set in the early twentieth century.

The nativity scene includes the presence of water on which the characteristic flat-bottomed boats, the batele, will float, which are used to navigate along the canals of the lagoon. On a small beach there will also be a grandmother who watches over her grandchildren while they play with the dog.

One of these ‘batele’ will be steered by a fisherwoman and will have the Three Wise Men on board. Just as it happens in reality, in the lagoon there will also be some ‘briccole’, structures used to indicate the various directions in nautical navigation. These signals will indicate Aquileia, the Sanctuary of the Incoronata Vergine on the island of Barbana, Trieste and Venice.

The 29-meter Christmas tree

This year the Christmas tree that will be lit on December 7 is a 29-meter tall fir tree from Ledro, in Trentino.

The choice of this tree was not made only for aesthetic reasons but is the result of a responsible ecological choice. The cutting of this tree will in fact allow for the natural replacement of plants in the Pefc-certified forest for the next decades.

The annual regrowth of the Ledro forests is certified for 8,260 cubic meters and the fir tree removed is part of one of the lots that will have to be cut for the correct cultivation of the forest. The gift of the Christmas tree for Pope Francis is not limited to the specimen in St. Peter’s Square. Associations, institutions, entities but also ordinary citizens have donated and decorated 29 other smaller trees from decorated cultivations that will be placed in offices, buildings and other areas of the Holy See.
