Caravaggio mai visto prima? In mostra a Palazzo Barberini
Il dipinto attribuito a Caravaggio e mai esposto prima di adesso, sarà presto reso visibile a tutti a Palazzo Barberini.
L’opera, appartenente a una collezione privata, potrà essere ammirata dal 21 novembre fino al 23 febbraio 2025 a Roma.
Il prelato raffigurato è Maffeo Barberini, prima nominato cardinale e successivamente salì al soglio di Pietro col nome di papa Urbano VIII.
Da più di cinquant’anni di questo lavoro se ne era persa ogni traccia ma per qualche mese verrà riportato tra i capolavori di Palazzo Barberini, dove il protagonista effigiato visse.
A citare il ritratto realizzato da Caravaggio per Maffeo Barberini fu negli anni Venti del Seicento Giulio Mancini, primo biografo dell’artista, quando Caravaggio era morto da una decina d’anni.
Il dipinto a olio su tela di 124 centimetri per 90, uscì dal palazzo negli anni Trenta, quando la collezione Barberini fu letteralmente smembrata.
La sua esposizione oramai prossima a Palazzo Barberini, non sarà che un’anteprima della grande mostra monografica dedicata a Caravaggio, prevista per marzo 2025, in occasione dell’anno giubilare.
Dietro l’attribuzione dell’opera a Caravaggio c’è Roberto Longhi che la rinvenne in un negozio di antiquariato fiorentino. La sua prima foto fu pubblicata nel lontano 1963 sulla rivista Paragone e ottenne il bene placito della comunità scientifica e fino al momento l’attribuzione non è stata messa in discussione sebbene fino al momento in molto pochi abbiano avuto l’occasione di vedere l’opera con i propri occhi.
Prima dell’esposizione, l’opera è stata sottoposta a indagini diagnostiche accurate.
Staremo a vedere se, con l’osservazione diretta e dopo i risultati delle indagini diagnostiche, l’attribuzione rimarrà confermata o no e chissà lo Stato italiano provi ad acquistala.

Never seen before? On display at Palazzo Barberini
The painting attributed to Caravaggio and never exhibited before will be made visible to everyone in Rome, at Palazzo Barberini.
The work belonging to a private collection can be admired from November 21st until February 23rd 2025 in Rome.
The prelate depicted, Maffeo Barberini, was first appointed cardinal, then became pope with the name of Urban VIII. For more than fifty years, all trace of this work had been lost but it will be brought back for a few months among the masterpieces of Palazzo Barberini, where the depicted protagonist lived.
The portraits made by Caravaggio for Maffeo Barberini were mentioned in the 1620s by Giulio Mancini, the artist’s first biographer, when Caravaggio had been dead for about ten years. The 124 x 90 centimeter oil on canvas painting left the palace in the 1930s, when the Barberini collection was literally dismembered.
Its upcoming exhibition at Palazzo Barberini will be nothing more than a preview of the large monographic exhibition dedicated to Caravaggio, scheduled for March 2025, on the occasion of the jubilee year.
Behind the attribution of the work to Caravaggio is Roberto Longhi who found it in a Florentine antique shop. The first photo of it was published way back in 1963 in the magazine Paragone and received the approval of the scientific community and up until now the attribution has not been questioned although up until now very few have had the opportunity to see the work with their own eyes.
We will see if, with direct observation, the attribution will remain confirmed and perhaps the Italian State will try to purchase it.
