Prima di metter mano a un’opera, che fosse di scultura o pittura, studiavo a lungo le pose dei protagonisti tracciando su carta tracciando su carta le loro movenze, la composizione complessiva e dettagli a cui sapevo di voler dare una certa forma.

Fu così anche per il Tondo Doni, o Sacra Famiglia che dir si voglia, l’unica opera dipinta su supporto mobile sicuramente mia. Come vi ho raccontato in altre occasioni, gli altri dipinti su tavola esistenti sono attribuiti a me ma ancora continuano a far discutere gli esperti.

Orbene, oltre allo studio della Testa della Madonna relativo al Tondo Doni, esiste un altro disegno tracciato prima di metter mano ai pennelli.

Si tratta dello studio per la gamba di Gesù Bambino a penna del 1504. Come è noto, disegnare il corpo umano per me era più che un esercizio di stile. Avevo dedicato ore e ore allo studio dal vero dell’anatomia umana facendo pratica sui cadaveri scorticati, provenienti dallo Spedale di Santo Spirito.

La posizione flessa della gamba destra che sta ruotando rende molto bene l’idea di essere in movimento e non ferma. Come se fosse una fotografia, disegnai su carta quel preciso istante in cui il Bimbo sembra far forza sul piede.

Con rapidi segni poi tracciai sommariamente la presenza dell’altra gamba per dargli la giusta collocazione nello spazio.

Lo studio della gamba del Bambino e quello della testa della Vergine sono gli unici disegni preparatori del Tondo Doni arrivati fino ai vostri giorni ed entrambi appartengono alla ricca collezione di Casa Buonarroti.

The Leg of Baby Jesus: the Study for the Doni Tondo

Before starting a work, whether sculpture or painting, I would study the poses of the protagonists for a long time by tracing their poses on paper, the overall composition and details to which I knew I wanted to give a certain shape.

This was also the case for the Doni Tondo, or Holy Family, if you prefer, the only work painted on a mobile support that is definitely mine. As I have told you on other occasions, the other existing paintings on wood are attributed to me but they still continue to be a source of discussion among experts.

Well, in addition to the study of the Head of the Madonna related to the Doni Tondo, there is another drawing traced before putting my hand to the brushes.

It is the study for the leg of Baby Jesus in pen from 1504. As is well known, drawing the human body for me was more than an exercise in style. I had dedicated hours and hours to the study of human anatomy from life, practicing on flayed cadavers from the Spedale di Santo Spirito.

The flexed position of the right leg that is rotating gives a very good idea of ​​being in motion and not still. As if it were a photograph, I drew on paper that precise moment in which the Child seems to be pushing on his foot.

Then, with quick signs, I roughly traced the presence of the other leg to give it the right position in space.

The study of the Child’s leg and that of the Virgin’s head are the only preparatory drawings of the Doni Tondo that have survived to this day and both belong to the rich collection of Casa Buonarroti.
