La Deposizione di Cristo nel Sepolcro della National Gallery
Durante la mia prima permanenza a Roma, mi fu chiesto di realizzare una pala d’altare destinata alla Chiesa di Sant’Agostino.
Era il settembre del 1500 quando accettai di buon grado quella commissione destinata a decorare la cappella che, recentemente, aveva ricevuto in dono 550 ducati da parte del vescovo di Crotone, Giovanni Ebu.
Parte di quei soldi sarebbero serviti per pagare la commissione.
Il vescovo era morto quattro anni prima ma fu necessario molto tempo prima che alcune beghe scaturite dal suo testamento fossero sciolte.
Infatti, il 2 settembre 1500 furono versati sul mio conto del Banco Balducci 60 ducati per cominciare a lavorare a quella pala d’altare.
Di quale opera si trattava però?
In tutti i documenti rinvenuti non c’è alcun accenno al soggetto della tavola però, dato che era destinata a una cappella funebre, una Pietà o una Deposizione sarebbe stata più che appropriata.
Molto probabilmente quell’opera non era altro che la Deposizione di Cristo a tempera su tavola, oggi alla National Gallery di Londra, inventariata a partire dal 1644 nella collezione Farnese.

The Deposition of Christ in the Tomb of the National Gallery
During my first stay in Rome, I was asked to create an altarpiece for the Church of Sant’Agostino.
It was September 1500 when I willingly accepted that commission intended to decorate the chapel which had recently received a gift of 550 ducats from the bishop of Crotone, Giovanni Ebu. Part of that money would be used to pay the commission.
The bishop had died four years earlier but it took a long time before some disputes arising from his will were resolved.
In fact, on 2 September 1500, 60 ducats were paid into my Banco Balducci account to begin work on that altarpiece.
But which work was it?
In all the documents found there is no mention of the subject of the panel, however, given that it was intended for a funeral chapel, a Pietà or a Deposition would have been more than appropriate.
Most likely that work was none other than the Deposition of Christ in tempera on panel now in the National Gallery in London, inventoried starting from 1644 in the Farnese collection.
