«Covoni» di Monet all’asta da Sotheby’s: stima 30 milioni di dollari
L’opera iconica dell’artista impressionista Claude Monet, intitolata «Meules à Giverny» (1893), è pronta a fare la sua comparsa sul mercato dell’arte.
Il dipinto, noto per raffigurare i grandi covoni di fieno, verrà messo all’asta da Sotheby’s New York il 15 maggio, in concomitanza con il centocinquantesimo anniversario della prima mostra degli impressionisti a Parigi.
Nel 1893, nel pieno della stagione della raccolta del fieno, Claude Monet posizionò il suo cavalletto nel prato situato un po’ più a sud del luogo dove qualche anno dopo avrebbe creato lo stagno delle ninfee. Fu lì che dipinse Meules à Giverny. Permeato di luci e movimento, il dipinto a olio esprime al meglio l’impressionismo bucolico di Monet, prendendo come soggetto uno dei più amati dell’artista: quello dei pagliai.
Il quadro, il cui valore è stimato in oltre 30 milioni di dollari, è stato a lungo custodito nelle collezioni d’arte statunitensi, dopo che il pittore paesaggista americano Dwight Blaney lo acquistò a Parigi nel 1895 e lo portò negli Stati Uniti. Da allora è stato esibito in varie istituzioni statunitensi, tra cui il Museum of Fine Arts di Boston.
Dopo oltre quarant’anni in una collezione privata americana, «Meules à Giverny» sarà offerto all’asta insieme ad altre opere di artisti rinomati come Camille Pissarro, Childe Hassam e Pablo Picasso. Il quadro sarà in mostra a New York a partire dal 3 maggio, offrendo agli amanti dell’arte l’opportunità di ammirare da vicino l’opera di Monet.
Non è la prima volta che un’opera di Monet con questo affascinante soggetto entra nel mercato dell’arte: cinque anni fa, un dipinto simile intitolato «Meules» (1890) è stato venduto da Sotheby’s New York per la straordinaria cifra di 110,7 milioni di dollari, stabilendo un record per l’artista e il prezzo più alto mai pagato per un’opera impressionista all’asta.

Monet’s “Sheaves” at auction at Sotheby’s: estimate of 30 million dollars
Impressionist artist Claude Monet’s iconic work, entitled «Meules à Giverny» (1893), is ready to make its appearance on the art market.
The painting, known for depicting large haystacks, will be auctioned at Sotheby’s New York on May 15, coinciding with the sesquicentennial of the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris.
In 1893, at the height of the hay harvest season, Claude Monet positioned his easel in the meadow located a little further south of the place where a few years later he would create the water lily pond. It was there that he painted Meules à Giverny. Imbued with light and movement, the oil painting best expresses Monet’s bucolic impressionism, taking as its subject one of the artist’s most beloved: that of haystacks.
The painting, whose value is estimated at over 30 million dollars, has long been kept in US art collections, after the American landscape painter Dwight Blaney bought it in Paris in 1895 and brought it to the United States. It has since been exhibited in various US institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
After more than forty years in a private American collection, «Meules à Giverny» will be offered at auction together with other works by renowned artists such as Camille Pissarro, Childe Hassam and Pablo Picasso. The painting will be on display in New York starting May 3, offering art lovers the opportunity to admire Monet’s work up close.
It is not the first time that a work by Monet with this fascinating subject has entered the art market: five years ago, a similar painting entitled «Meules» (1890) was sold at Sotheby’s New York for the extraordinary sum of 110, $7 million, setting a record for the artist and the highest price ever paid for an Impressionist work at auction.
