La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Amore e Psiche realizzata da Reinhold Begas fra il 1854 e il 1857.

L’artista, per dar forma alla sua prima grande opera da realizzare in piena autonomia, volle scolpire nel marmo una delle storie d’amore più celebri: la favola di Amore e Psiche narrata da Apuleio all’interno delle Metamorfosi.

Psiche, una mortale capace di eguagliare in bellezza Venere, sposa il dio Amore senza vederlo mai. Lui si presenta solo con il calare delle tenebre per non essere visto in volto. Istigata dalle sue sorelle, la giovane riesce a scoprire l’identità di quel dio e prima di poter ricongiungersi a lui deve affrontare una serie di prove al termine delle quali otterrà l’immortalità.

Begas scelse di raffigurare il momento più drammatico di quella storia, quando Psiche si china su Amore e, aiutandosi con la lampada a olio, cerca di scoprirne le fattezze del volto. In quel momento una goccia d’olio caldo cade su Amore che, accortosi dell’inganno, fugge sconvolto.

La testa di Psiche è il punto più alto del complesso scultoreo che ha una struttura a triangolo con un’ampia base di forma ovale.

Il trattamento delle superfici così come sinuose forme date ai due protagonisti, mostrano il passaggio dell’artista da forme rigorose che ebbe fino a quel momento a linee più morbide che poi caratterizzeranno la scultura neobarocca.

Sculpture of the day: Cupid and Psyche by Reinhold Begas

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Cupid and Psyche created by Reinhold Begas between 1854 and 1857.

The artist, to give shape to his first major work to be created in full autonomy, wanted to sculpt one of the most famous love stories in marble: the fable of Cupid and Psyche narrated by Apuleius in the Metamorphoses.

Psyche, a mortal capable of equaling Venus in beauty, marries the god Love without ever seeing him. He only shows up as darkness falls so as not to be seen in the face. Instigated by her sisters, the young woman manages to discover the identity of that god and before being able to reunite with him she must face a series of tests at the end of which she will obtain immortality.

Begas chose to depict the most dramatic moment of that story, when Psyche bends over Cupid and, with the help of the oil lamp, tries to discover the features of his face. At that moment a drop of hot oil falls on Love who, realizing the deception, runs away shocked.

The head of Psyche is the highest point of the sculptural complex which has a triangular structure with a wide oval-shaped base.

The treatment of the surfaces as well as the sinuous shapes given to the two protagonists show the artist’s transition from the rigorous forms he had up to that moment to the softer lines that would later characterize neo-Baroque sculpture.
