The Lucanian nativity scene in the church of Santissima Annunziata in Siena
In the church of the Santissima Annunziata in Siena, located in front of the cathedral, the monumental nativity scene arrived directly from the Basilicata region will be visible until 2 February 2024.
The nativity scene was designed by the artist Francesco Artese who brings Lucanian nativity scene art to cathedrals around the world.
With its 60 square meters, built with stone, wood, clay and polystyrene, the nativity scene is populated by one hundred and twenty terracotta characters made by hand and painted one by one.
The clothes worn by the various characters faithfully reproduce the Lucanian textile tradition.
Looking at the nativity scene you have the sensation of seeing the various characters come to life who seem to walk the streets between the Sassi of Matera, a UNESCO heritage site since 1993.
The nativity scene artist Artese has in fact thought well of setting the Nativity in a typical landscape of Basilicata, among steep stairs, stone caves and stately buildings that alternate with vegetable gardens and bell towers.
The houses dug directly into the tuff, leaning against each other, complete the evocative scenario in which the various characters move.
The Virgin Mary is not in adoration of the Child as usually happens in nativity scenes but directly recalls the bronze sculpture of the Madonna created by Daphne du Barry who raises the Son towards the sky to show him and at the same time give him to humanity.
For the moment, your Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you and will meet you in the next posts on social media.
