L’Opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione dei pastori dipinta nel Settecento da Giuseppe Antonio Pianca.

La scena si svolge in una grotta buia, rischiarata dalla luce emanata dal Bambino appena venuto al mondo e dal chiarore di una candela tenuta in mano da San Giuseppe, coperta parzialmente dalla mano sinistra. Sullo sfondo si intravede la notte rischiarata dai lampi di un temporale in corso.

Nonostante la nascita di Cristo porti gioia, l’opera non suscita un senso di serenità ma piuttosto un’inquietudine tangibile. Guardate per esempio lo sguardo del Bambino: non ha niente di gioioso e sembra quasi che quegli occhi siano già privi di vita.

C’è dolore in questa Natività ed è quello della Passione che i protagonisti della scena presagiscono nel futuro già scritto di Cristo.

Il pittore della Valsesia Giuseppe Antonio Pianca, raffigurò la Vergine posizionata dietro il Bambino, concentrata nel contemplarlo. E’ deposto su un panno bianco che lo isola dalla paglia della mangiatoia.

Osservando la scena si comprende che il contesto è povero e ci sono solo pochissimi oggetti in giro. Nella penombra fanno la loro comparsa il bue e l’asinello che con il loro fiato riscaldano l’ambiente.

Dietro la Vergine arriva un pastore che in atteggiamento umile e di devozione prima si toglie il cappello e poi rivolge lo sguardo verso il basso.

Questa Adorazione dei Pastori di Pianca nella quale si ritrovano assonanze con dipinti di Rubens, appartiene alla Banca Popolare di Novara.

The Works of Christmas: the Adoration of the Shepherds by Giuseppe Antonio Pianca

The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the Adoration of the Shepherds painted in the eighteenth century by Giuseppe Antonio Pianca.

The scene takes place in a dark cave, illuminated by the light emanating from the Child who has just come into the world and by the light of a candle held in the hand of Saint Joseph. In the background we can glimpse the night illuminated by the flashes of an ongoing storm.

Although the birth of Christ brings joy, the work does not arouse a sense of serenity but rather a tangible restlessness. Look at the Child’s gaze for example: there is nothing joyful about him and it almost seems as if those eyes are already lifeless.

There is pain in this Nativity and it is that of the Passion that the protagonists of the scene foresee in the already written future of Christ.

The painter from Valsesia Giuseppe Antonio Pianca depicted the Virgin positioned behind the Child, concentrated in contemplating him. It is placed on a white cloth that isolates it from the straw of the manger. Looking at the scene you understand that the context is poor and there are only very few objects around. In the twilight the ox and the donkey make their appearance and heat the environment with their breath.

Behind the Virgin comes a shepherd who, in a humble and devotional attitude, first takes off his hat and then turns his gaze downwards.

This Adoration of the Shepherds by Pianca, in which we find similarities with paintings by Rubens, belongs to the Banca Popolare di Novara.
