Il giorno del Giudizio è arrivato.

Mentre Cristo al centro della scena rivolge il suo sguardo verso i dannati, dalla parte opposta, al di sotto del braccio levato, iniziano a risorgere dai sepolcri coloro che in terra si guadagnarono il Paradiso.

Capisco sia complicato far caso ai dettagli quando ci si trova nella Cappella Sistina. La folla, la confusione e la voglia di abbracciare tutto con lo sguardo non aiutano a notare i particolari, fondamentali per farsi trasportare all’interno della narrazione.

In basso a sinistra affrescai due figure che con fatica spostano la lasta della tomba per tornare a vedere la luce. I loro corpi poderosi fanno fatica a riemergere, schiacciati dal peso della pietra.

Sulla gamba di uno dei due uomini si nota una striscia scura: è una porzione di affresco non restaurata, lasciata a testimonianza di come fossero sporchi e oscurati i colori prima dell’ultimo restauro.

Proseguendo a osservare la zona dei risorgenti, vedrete un corpo che si sta elevando trattenuto dalla mano di un demone, usando letteralmente un serpe che guarda dritto negli occhi lo spettatore.

In primo piano fa la sua comparsa un uomo con una gamba piegata e l’altra distesa che con evidente sforzo sta cercando di liberarsi per poter ascendere al cielo.

Fra anime e corpi che già hanno iniziato la ascesa, c’è chi si sta destando poco a poco, c’è chi ancora pare più morto che vivo e non mancano scheletri ancora avvolti nel sudario.

Osservate con attenzione la differenza che c’è fra le figure in primo piano molto dettagliate e ben definite e quelle sullo sfondo, più evanescenti e dipinte con poche pennellate.

Ebbene, quella era la maniera che avevo per dare profondità alle scene. Se ci fate caso, in qualsiasi contesto che vi si presenta nella vita reale, le figure che rimangono più lontane dal punto di osservazione assumono note di colore azzurrognole e hanno linee meno definite.

From the depths of the earth to the sky: the resurrected in the Judgment

I understand it is difficult to pay attention to the details when you are in the Sistine Chapel. The crowd, the confusion and the desire to embrace everything with a glance do not help to notice the details, which are essential to get carried away within the narrative.

At the bottom left, I frescoed two figures who with difficulty move the tombstone to see the light again. Their powerful bodies struggle to re-emerge, crushed by the weight of the stone.

A dark stripe can be seen on the leg of one of the two men: it is an unrestored portion of the fresco, left as evidence of how dirty and obscured the colors were before the last restoration.

Continuing to observe the area of the resurgences, you will see a body that is rising held by the hand of a demon, literally using a snake that looks straight into the eyes of the viewer.

In the foreground, a man appears with one bent hand and the other stretched out, who with evident effort is trying to free himself in order to ascend to heaven.

Among souls and bodies that have already begun their ascent, there are those who are waking up little by little, those who still seem more dead than alive and there are skeletons still wrapped in their shrouds.

Observe carefully the difference between the highly detailed and well-defined figures in the foreground and those in the background, more evanescent and painted with just a few brushstrokes.
Well, that was the way I had to give depth to the scenes. If you pay attention, in any context that occurs in real life, the figures that remain furthest from the observation point take on bluish notes and have less defined lines.
