Nel corso degli anni ho avuto tanti servitori e domestici per occuparsi delle cose della vita quotidiana e per tenere la casa se non in ordine, perlomeno in uno stato accettabile.

Lavoravo senza sosta pure di notte: non avrei avuto tempo e modo per farmi carico di altre incombenze. Col calar del sole andavo sì a letto ma non riuscivo a chiudere occhio. Così spesso rimettevo i piedi a terra e ricominciavo a lavorare: poco importava se erano le due o le tre di notte. Accendevo le mie candele di sego di capra e facevo quel che potevo, senza i rumori che di giorno a volte mi incasinavano i pensieri.

Mi avvalsi della collaborazione di varie donne di servizio, molte delle quali le facevo arrivare dal paese di Castel Durante, la stessa cittadina di Francesco di Bernardino d ‘Amadore, il mio amato Urbino.

A volte erano donne imparentate con la sua famiglia, altre semplici conoscenti sue. Dato che tanto m’ero trovato bene con lui, volevo dare la possibilità di lavorare anche ad altra gente di quel posto.

Il primo giugno del 1559 venne a stare nella casa di Macel de’ Corvi la Girolama. Avrebbe dovuto occuparsi delle cose di casa per uno scudo d’oro al mese. La feci portare da Castel Durante a Roma da Pasquino, un mulattiere di fiducia e lo pagai quattro scudi d’oro per quel viaggio.

La Girolama rimase con me sedici mesi poi alla fine non riuscivo più a sopportarla. Voleva spadroneggiare a casa mia, erano continui battibecchi e litigi senza senso.

Il cinque d’agosto del 1560 la rimandai a casa sua con quaranta scudi d’oro in tasca.

“Oggi a cinque dì detto ò rimandata detta Girolama a Castel Durante con quaranta scudi d’oro che l’à avanzato meco in sedici mesi: che mai non ci fussi venuta: e quattro d’oro ò dati a Pasquino mulattiere che la riporti a Castel Durante.“

Pagai così altri quattro scudi d’oro al mulattiere Pasquino per farla ricondurre fino a Castel Durante e non la vidi più, per fortuna.

When I sent Girolama back to her house
