L’Opera del Natale di oggi è Il Canto degli Angeli, il celebre dipinto a olio su tela dell’artista francese William Adolphe Bourgereau.

Il Canto degli Angeli fu presentato per la prima volta al pubblico durante il Salone di Parigi nel 1881 e fu acquistato qualche anno dopo, nel 1940, dal Forest Lawn Museum di Glendale, in California che tutt’oggi ne detiene la proprietà.

Bouguereau, nato a La Rochelle il 30 novembre del 1825, fu un illustre esponente della corrente artistica dell’accademismo. Fin dai primissimi anni della sua vita, aveva dimostrato di avere un innato talento per la pittura ed ebbe la possibilità di studiare nell’ l‘École des Beaux-Arts di Parigi, una delle più prestigiose accademie d’arte della sua epoca, situata nei pressi del Museo del Louvre.

La sua fama spiccò il volo proprio nel periodo più favorevole dell’arte accademica. Ne fu un innamorato sostenitore e nel corso della sua fiorente carriera realizzò opere che lo hanno reso immortale.

Nel dipinto Il Canto degli Angeli, Bouguereau rappresenta una scena di una dolcezza e armonia infinite. La Vergine abbigliata con una veste blu drappeggiata e il capo coperto da un velo bianco, è seduta su un capitello mentre fa sedere sulle ginocchia il Figlio.

Il Bambino, rassicurato dalla presenza della Mamma, si lascia andare in un sonno sereno appoggiando la testa sul suo petto. Tre angeli musicanti suonano una melodia celestiale per favorire il riposo del Salvatore del Mondo.

La teoria non ha posto nella formazione di base dell’artista. Sono l’occhio e la mano che devono essere esercitati durante gli anni di formazione dei giovani. È sempre possibile in seguito acquisire le conoscenze necessarie per la produzione di un’opera d’arte, ma mai, e sottolineo questo punto, la perseveranza e la tenacia di un uomo maturo sarà sufficiente se la pratica è insufficiente e non può esservi maggiore angoscia di quella sentita dall’artista che vede la realizzazione del proprio sogno ostacolata da un’esecuzione mediocre.

Theory has no place in the basic training of the artist. They are the eye and the hand that must be exercised during the formative years of young people. It is always possible afterwards to acquire the knowledge necessary for the production of a work of art, but never, and I stress this point, will the perseverance and tenacity of a mature man be sufficient if practice is insufficient and there can be no greater anguish of that felt by the artist who sees the realization of his dream hindered by a mediocre execution
