La Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana m’era già stata commissionata nel 1519 ma iniziai a metter mano al progetto anni dopo, nel 1524, quando Clemente VII de’ Medici già era stato eletto papa.

Le fondamenta così come i contrafforti esterni furono realizzati fra il 1524 e il 1525. In pratica in quel frangente c’era solo la struttura portante e mancava ancora tutto il resto. Papa Clemente VII aveva particolarmente a cuore la Biblioteca e per mezzo del Fattucci si informava continuamente sul procedere dei lavori.

In modo particolare si informava sul progetto dei banchi di lettura così misi nero su bianco la mia idea disegnando il progetto che sarebbe poi stato trasformato nei plutei in legno che vedete oggi.

Col mio progetto, il sedile, il leggio e lo spazio dove poter conservare i libri diveniva un tutt’uno, differenziandosi sostanzialmente dai banchi di lettura quattrocenteschi.

Il disegno in questione lo realizzai presumibilmente nel 1524 ma gli 88 plutei in tiglio e pino furono assemblati e intagliati quando oramai ero a Roma. Affidai la loro costruzione a Battista del Cinque e al Ciapino ma quei banchi così lavorati richiedevano un maggiore lavoro di squadra per accorciare i tempi di esecuzione.

Così a metà del Cinquecento iniziarono a lavorarci anche il Carota e Giovan Battista del Tasso, in quel momento impegnato anche nella realizzazione del soffitto ligneo.

Il Fattucci che come un paziente amanuense annotava tutte le sue ricordanze, scrisse che gli intagliatori erano un po’ di più senza citarne il nome ahimè.

Nel settembre del 1534 annotò che stavano lavorando ai plutei sei artigiani e altrettanti erano impegnati con il soffitto.

Here is who physically created the reading benches of the Laurentian Library

The Laurentian Library had already been commissioned to me in 1519 but I began to put my hand to the project years later, in 1524, when Clement VII de ‘Medici had already been elected pope.

So in the mid-sixteenth century Carota and Giovan Battista del Tasso also began to work on it, at that time also involved in the construction of the wooden ceiling.

Fattucci who, like an amanuensis patient, wrote down all the memories of him, wrote that the carvers were a little more without mentioning his name alas.
