Working by candlelight in the middle of the night

In my day it is known that there was no electric light and to work after sunset you could only do it by using candlelight.

The flickering light of the candles, however, had some flaws: if you were not careful there was the risk of making everything catch fire. In my house where there was a lot of paper and the beams were wooden, you can imagine what a disaster would have happened due to even a minimal distraction.

I slept little and often got out of bed at night. Being with my hands was not my habit so I took mallet and steps and began to sculpt. In order to be able to see clearly in front of me, I had tried to make something to put on my head where I would place a beautiful lighted candle on it to make me light. So I had my hands free and I didn’t make a shadow with my body.

I did not use beeswax candles but those of pure goat sevo: they stank a little but lasted much longer and did not drip on my face.

Vasari, who knew of this nocturnal habit of mine, wanted to send me four bunches of goat-fat candles which in all weighed a good 40 pounds, which is about 17 pounds.

For the moment, your Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you by giving you an appointment at the next posts and on social networks.
