Il mio caro amico Giorgio Vasari lo definì come il pavimento “più bello, grande e magnifico che mai fusse stato fatto” .

Lo stupefacente pavimento della cattedrale di Siena, dedicata a di Santa Maria Assunta, torna finalmente accessibile pubblico o meglio, accessibile lo è sempre stato ma coperto per proteggerlo dal calpestio dei numerosi visitatori.

Realizzato in commesso marmoreo e graffito ha tante storie da raccontare a chi lo osserva: una per ogni tarsia. La sua esecuzione fu avviata nel Trecento e si protrasse nei secoli a seguire fino ad arrivare al suo completamento nell’Ottocento.

I cartoni preparatori per tutte le cinquantasei tarsie furono realizzate da artisti senesi meno uno: il Pinturicchio. Il pittore era infatti originario di Perugia e realizzò nel 1505 il cartone per la tarsia del Monte della Sapienza.

La pavimentazione verrà di nuovo resa fruibile da lunedì 27 giugno fino a domenica 31 luglio 2022 e da giovedì 18 agosto fino a martedì 18 ottobre 2022.

Le prime tarsie eseguite furono realizzate in marmo bianco. Gli abili artigiani, dopo aver creato dei solchi con lo scalpello, li riempirono accuratamente con lo stucco nero. Procedendo con i lavori vennero aggiunti anche marmi policromi e preziose tarsie lignee.

Per accedere al Duomo di Siena e vedere lo straordinario pavimento il costo è di 8 euro per i biglietto intero e di 6 euro per il ridotto.

I bambini fino a 6 anni entrano gratuitamente come entrano gratis i residenti o nati nel Comune di Siena, i disabili con accompagnatore, i religiosi, gli studenti dell’Università di Siena e dell’Università per stranieri di Siena e i giornalisti accreditati.

Già che entrate nella Cattedrale, vi consiglio di visitare l’intero complesso museale che comprende anche la Libreria Piccolomini e l’Altare Piccolomini dove potrete ammirare quattro mie opere.

Il costo del biglietto integrato, Opa Si Pass, ha un costo di 15 euro per gli adulti e di soli 2 euro per i bambini con età compresa dai 7 agli 11 anni.

The floor of the cathedral of Siena is now visible

Vasari defined it as the “most beautiful, largest and most magnificent floor that had ever been made”.

The astonishing floor of the cathedral of Siena, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, is finally back accessible to the public or rather, accessible it has always been but covered to protect it from the trampling of numerous visitors.

Made in marble and graffiti, it has many stories to tell to the observer: one for each inlay. Its execution began in the fourteenth century and lasted over the following centuries until it was completed in the nineteenth century.

The preparatory cartoons for all fifty-six inlays were made by Sienese artists except one: Pinturicchio. The painter was in fact a native of Perugia and in 1505 created the cartoon for the inlay of the Monte della Sapienza.

The flooring will be made available again from Monday 27 June until Sunday 31 July 2022 and from Thursday 18 August until Tuesday 18 October 2022.

The first inlays performed were made of white marble. The skilled craftsmen, after creating grooves with the chisel, carefully filled them with black putty. As the work proceeded, polychrome marbles and precious wooden inlays were also added.
