The dagger of the Cumana Sibyl
Cumaean Sibyl is one of the oldest sibyls that I frescoed on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. She is depicted physically very strong for her age and extremely concentrated ready to preach the prophecies written in the big book with bluish-green cover.
In the background there’s a child standing by the sybyl’s throne, with a book bound in red under his arm. Pfeiffer as well as other writers argue that the two young figures behind the sibyl are the representations of Memory and Intellect who give up their strength while next to her.
Take a good look at the lower part of fresco & you’ll notice a bag containing papers as well as a dagger in its sheath. The Cumaean Sibyl is known for having predicted bloody events, so I included this detail in order to point this out.
Yours truly, Michelangelo Buonarroti and my stories
