The optical illusion of the barrel vault
“All the manners, all the complexions, all ‘and movements, all the poses, all the possible states of a human body and all the affections of the soul can be seen expressed”
Thus wrote Flavio Biondo in his work “Triumphant Rome” of 1544, referring to the vault of the Sistine Chapel.
Think about it: whoever is under there has the feeling of being in front of a very curved vault but in reality it is not like that.
The illusion of perspective owes much to the decorations of the frames of the sails that make the vault much more concave to the human eye than it actually is.
The frames made up of flat bands I then decorated with pearls, fusarole, valves of pecten shells alternating with acorns alluding to the surname of the commissioning pope Julius II della Rovere.
Your always cold and hungry Michelangelo Buonarroti
