Il cuore storico di Cremona è stato colpito dalla violenta tromba d’aria accompagnata da grandine che venerdì 28 agosto ha investito la città.

La copertura di una delle guglie del Duomo è crollata, mentre il grande rosone ha riportato danni visibili. Colpite almeno dieci chiese. Gravemente danneggiata anche la Torre Civica del Palazzo Comunale.

Il bilancio complessivo parla di 43 feriti, otto famiglie evacuate e circa 10mila automobili danneggiate.

Cremona si è risvegliata con un’immagine difficile da accettare per una città che ha nel suo patrimonio monumentale uno dei propri simboli più importanti: la Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, il celebre Duomo di Cremona, porta i segni della violenta tempesta che in pochi minuti ha attraversato il centro storico.

La furia del vento ha provocato il crollo della copertura di una delle guglie della Cattedrale, mentre la grandine ha colpito anche le superfici vetrate del grande rosone. Il maltempo ha così lasciato una ferita evidente nel cuore monumentale della città.

La guglia del Duomo cede sotto la furia del vento

È soprattutto la guglia danneggiata della Cattedrale a raccontare la violenza dell’evento atmosferico.

La tromba d’aria, accompagnata da una grandinata eccezionale e da forti raffiche, ha investito il complesso monumentale di Piazza del Comune, uno degli spazi urbani medievali più riconoscibili della Lombardia.

Secondo le prime ricostruzioni, la copertura di una delle guglie laterali del Duomo è crollata. Il danno riguarda dunque una parte dell’architettura superiore della Cattedrale, particolarmente esposta alla violenza delle raffiche.

Non è soltanto un danno edilizio. La Cattedrale rappresenta uno dei monumenti simbolo di Cremona e il suo complesso architettonico costituisce, insieme al Torrazzo e al Palazzo Comunale, il cuore storico e artistico della città.

Il sindaco Andrea Virgilio ha spiegato che la Cattedrale è rimasta aperta, mentre proseguono le verifiche e gli interventi necessari per mettere in sicurezza le zone interessate.

Danneggiato anche il grande rosone

La furia della grandine non ha risparmiato neppure il grande rosone della Cattedrale.

Le immagini del dopo-tempesta mostrano i segni lasciati dall’impatto dei chicchi di grandine sulle superfici vetrate. È uno degli aspetti che rende particolarmente delicato il bilancio dei danni al patrimonio storico e artistico della città.

Il Duomo, infatti, non è stato un episodio isolato. Almeno dieci chiese cremonesi hanno riportato danni durante la violenta perturbazione.

Per una città conosciuta in tutto il mondo per il proprio patrimonio artistico, architettonico e musicale, la conta dei danni assume quindi una dimensione che va oltre l’emergenza immediata.

La Piazza del Comune colpita nei suoi monumenti simbolo

Il maltempo ha colpito contemporaneamente due dei principali simboli architettonici di Cremona.

Se il Duomo ha perso parte della copertura di una guglia, anche la vicina Torre Civica del Palazzo Comunale ha subito un grave danneggiamento: la parte alta della torre è crollata e l’edificio è stato dichiarato inagibile.

È una ferita concentrata in pochi metri quadrati, nel cuore di quella Piazza del Comune che costituisce uno degli insiemi monumentali medievali più importanti della città.

La violenza dell’evento atmosferico appare ancora più evidente osservando le fotografie del centro storico: tegole, frammenti di coperture, rami e detriti hanno invaso strade e piazze, mentre vigili del fuoco e Protezione civile hanno lavorato per rendere nuovamente accessibili le aree interessate.

Dieci minuti che hanno cambiato il volto della città

La tromba d’aria è durata soltanto una manciata di minuti, ma è stata sufficiente a provocare danni enormi.

Secondo il primo bilancio, migliaia di alberi sono stati abbattuti, decine di edifici hanno riportato danni alle coperture e circa 10mila automobili sono state colpite dalla grandine.

Il sindaco ha riferito che il vento ha raggiunto circa 90 chilometri orari, mentre la grandine avrebbe raggiunto dimensioni eccezionali, fino a circa 10 centimetri di diametro. In circa venti minuti sarebbe inoltre caduta una quantità di pioggia equivalente a circa l’80% di quella normalmente registrata nell’intero mese di agosto.

Un’intensità che ha trasformato rapidamente una perturbazione estiva in una vera emergenza.

Case scoperchiate e famiglie evacuate

La tempesta non ha risparmiato neppure le abitazioni.

Decine di case e palazzi hanno riportato danni ai tetti e almeno otto famiglie sono state costrette a lasciare le proprie abitazioni dopo essere rimaste senza una copertura sicura. Sono in corso ulteriori verifiche sulla stabilità degli edifici colpiti.

In diversi punti della città gli alberi abbattuti hanno ostruito le strade. Quattro persone sono state inoltre soccorse dopo essere rimaste bloccate all’interno delle proprie automobili.

Il bilancio umano parla di 43 persone assistite al pronto soccorso di Cremona. Quattro sono state ricoverate per fratture del femore, mentre gli altri feriti sono stati dimessi perché non presentavano condizioni gravi.

Oltre 500 interventi dei vigili del fuoco in Lombardia

La macchina dei soccorsi è stata mobilitata immediatamente.

I vigili del fuoco sono impegnati in oltre 500 interventi complessivi in Lombardia per affrontare le conseguenze dell’ondata di maltempo, con particolare concentrazione delle criticità nel Cremonese. Gli interventi riguardano la rimozione di alberi e rami, la messa in sicurezza degli edifici danneggiati e il soccorso alle persone in difficoltà.

A Cremona le operazioni sono proseguite anche nelle ore successive alla tempesta, mentre le autorità procedono con la verifica degli edifici e delle strutture pubbliche.

The historic heart of Cremona was hit by the violent tornado accompanied by hail that struck the city on Friday, August 28th. The roof of one of the Cathedral’s spires collapsed, while the large rose window sustained visible damage. At least ten churches were hit. The Civic Tower of the Town Hall was also severely damaged. The overall toll is 43 injured, eight families evacuated, and approximately 10,000 cars damaged.

Cremona awoke to a scene difficult to accept for a city whose monumental heritage is one of its most important symbols: the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the famous Cremona Cathedral, bears the scars of the violent storm that swept through the historic center in just a few minutes.

The fury of the wind caused the roof of one of the Cathedral’s spires to collapse, while the hail also struck the glass surfaces of the large rose window. The severe weather has thus left a visible wound in the monumental heart of the city.

The Cathedral’s spire collapses under the fury of the wind

It is above all the damaged spire of the Cathedral that speaks volumes about the violence of the atmospheric event.

The tornado, accompanied by exceptional hail and strong gusts, struck the monumental complex of Piazza del Comune, one of the most recognizable medieval urban spaces in Lombardy.

According to initial reports, the roof of one of the Cathedral’s lateral spires collapsed. The damage therefore affects a portion of the Cathedral’s upper architecture, particularly exposed to the violence of the gusts.

This is not just structural damage. The Cathedral is one of Cremona’s iconic monuments, and its architectural complex, together with the Torrazzo and the Palazzo Comunale, constitutes the historical and artistic heart of the city.

Mayor Andrea Virgilio explained that the Cathedral has remained open, while the necessary checks and interventions to secure the affected areas continue.

The great rose window was also damaged.

The fury of the hailstorm did not even spare the Cathedral’s great rose window.

Post-storm images show the marks left by the hailstones’ impact on the glass surfaces. This is one of the aspects that makes the assessment of the damage to the city’s historical and artistic heritage particularly delicate.

The Cathedral, in fact, was not an isolated incident. At least ten churches in Cremona suffered damage during the violent storm.

For a city known worldwide for its artistic, architectural, and musical heritage, the damage assessment therefore takes on a dimension that goes beyond the immediate emergency.

The Piazza del Comune was hit by its iconic monuments

The severe weather simultaneously struck two of Cremona’s main architectural symbols.

While the Cathedral lost part of the roof of one spire, the nearby Civic Tower of the Town Hall also suffered serious damage: the upper part of the tower collapsed, and the building was declared unfit for use.

It’s a wound concentrated in just a few square meters, in the heart of the Piazza del Comune, one of the city’s most important medieval monuments.

The violence of the storm is even more evident when looking at photographs of the historic center: tiles, fragments of roofing, branches, and debris invaded streets and squares, while firefighters and Civil Protection worked to make the affected areas accessible again.

Ten minutes that changed the face of the city

The tornado lasted only a handful of minutes, but it was enough to cause enormous damage.

According to initial reports, thousands of trees were downed, dozens of buildings suffered roof damage, and approximately 10,000 cars were struck by hail.

The mayor reported that winds reached approximately 90 kilometers per hour, while the hail reached exceptional dimensions, up to about 10 centimeters in diameter. Furthermore, in about twenty minutes, an amount of rainfall equivalent to about 80% of the amount normally recorded in the entire month of August fell.

Its intensity quickly transformed a summer storm into a full-blown emergency.

Roofs blown off homes and families evacuated

The storm did not spare even homes.

Dozens of homes and buildings suffered roof damage, and at least eight families were forced to leave their homes after being left without safe shelter. Further assessments are underway to determine the stability of the affected buildings.

In several parts of the city, downed trees blocked roads. Four people were also rescued after being trapped inside their cars.

The tollHumane reports speak of 43 people treated in the Cremona emergency room. Four were hospitalized for femur fractures, while the other injured were discharged because their condition was not serious.

Over 500 firefighters intervened in Lombardy

The rescue team was mobilized immediately.

Firefighters are engaged in over 500 interventions in Lombardy to address the consequences of the severe weather, with a particular focus on the critical areas in the Cremona area. These interventions include removing trees and branches, securing damaged buildings, and providing assistance to people in need.

In Cremona, operations continued in the hours following the storm, while authorities continue to inspect buildings and public facilities.
