una ricorrenza che mette al centro il ministero e l’autorità dell’apostolo Pietro, primo Vescovo di Roma. Non si tratta di una celebrazione dedicata a una sedia in particolare in senso materiale, ma bensì al simbolo della missione affidata da Cristo a Pietro: guidare la comunità cristiana.

Il significato della “Cattedra”

La parola cattedra deriva dal latino cathedra, che significa “seggio” o “sede”. Nella tradizione cristiana indica il luogo da cui il vescovo esercita il suo insegnamento e la sua autorità pastorale.

Nel caso di San Pietro, la cattedra rappresenta il fondamento dell’unità della Chiesa. Secondo il Vangelo di Matteo (16,18), Gesù affida a Pietro un compito speciale: essere la “roccia” su cui edificare la sua Chiesa.

Questa festa, celebra il ruolo del Papa come successore di Pietro e segno visibile di comunione tra i fedeli di tutto il mondo.

Ma cos’è la cattedra di San Pietro?

Letteralmente è il seggio del papa e quello dei vescovi. Si trova nelle chiese madri delle diocesi che prendono per questo il nome di cattedrali e sono il simbolo dell’autorità del vescovo e del suo magistero.

Papa Alessandro VII commissionò nel 1656  al Bernini la grande cattedra in bronzo che avrebbe dovuto contenere la reliquia della cattedra di San Pietro anche se, oramai è ampliamente dimostrato, sia un’opera Carolingia realizzata probabilmente poco prima dell’875 che niente ha a che fare con l’apostolo.

On February 22nd, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter: the founding moment of the Church, when Jesus said to his apostle, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.”

A celebration that focuses on the ministry and authority of the apostle Peter, the first Bishop of Rome. This celebration is not dedicated to a specific chair in a material sense, but rather to the symbol of the mission entrusted by Christ to Peter: to lead the Christian community.

The Meaning of the “Chair”

The word “chair” derives from the Latin cathedra, meaning “seat” or “seat.” In Christian tradition, it refers to the place from which the bishop exercises his teaching and pastoral authority.

In the case of Saint Peter, the chair represents the foundation of the Church’s unity. According to the Gospel of Matthew (16:18), Jesus entrusts Peter with a special task: to be the “rock” upon which his Church is built.

In 1656, Pope Alexander VII commissioned Bernini to create the large bronze chair that was to contain the relic of the Chair of St. Peter, although it is now widely demonstrated that it is a Carolingian work, probably created shortly before 875, and has nothing to do with the apostle.
