Papa Leone XIV ha ordinato l’esecuzione di un rito riparatorio urgente dopo che, qualche giorno fa, un uomo ha urinato sull’Altare della Confessione della Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano.

Il “Rito penitenziale riparatorio per restaurare la santità della Basilica di San Pietro e chiedere perdono a Dio per l’ingiuria compiuta”, come ha messo nero su bianco il pontefice, è stato eseguito ieri, lunedì 13 ottobre, attorno alle 12.30.

Esiste un precedente e risale all’agosto del 1999 quando un uomo si tolse la vita proprio all’interno della Basilica sparandosi un colpo di pistola. In quel caso però non fu ritenuto un gesto di profanazione e si tenne in conto della forte depressione e disperazione della vittima.

La cerimonia purificatoria prevede l’aspersione di acqua benedetta sia le navate della Basilica che lo stesso Altare profanato mentre vengono recitati salmi penitenziali e preghiere a porte chiuse.

Ma che fine ha fatto l’uomo che ha profanato l’altare?

Al momento è in stato di fermo presso gli Uffici della Gendarmeria Vaticana. Non è dato sapere la sua nazionalità al momento e quindi nemmeno si può capire se verrà consegnato alla Polizia italiana o di un altro Paese.

Pope Leo XIV has ordered an urgent rite of reparation after a man urinated on the Altar of Confession in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican a few days ago.

The “Reparative Penitential Rite to Restore the Sanctity of St. Peter’s Basilica and Ask God’s Forgiveness for the Injury,” as the pontiff wrote in writing, was performed yesterday, Monday, October 13, around 12:30 p.m. There is a precedent, dating back to August 1999, when a man took his own life inside the Basilica by shooting himself. In that case, however, it was not deemed an act of desecration, and the victim’s profound depression and desperation were taken into account.

The purification ceremony involves sprinkling holy water on both the naves of the Basilica and the desecrated altar itself, while penitential psalms and prayers are recited behind closed doors.

But what happened to the man who desecrated the altar?

He is currently being held at the Vatican Gendarmerie. His nationality is unknown at this time, so it’s not clear whether he will be handed over to the Italian police or another country.
