Era un 25 agosto come oggi quando nel 1922, lo scultore milanese Costantino Pandiani passò a miglior vita.

Esponente di un’importante famiglia di artisti e industriali milanesi dell’Ottocento, la sua produzione artistica si inserisce nella tradizione accademica e tardo-romantica del tempo.

Costantino Pandiani faceva parte di una nota dinastia di scultori che includeva suo cugino Giovanni Pandiani (1809-1879), e il fratello Antonio Pandiani (1838-1928), anch’egli scultore e in seguito responsabile della fonderia di famiglia.

L’ambiente in cui crebbe fu profondamente legato al mondo dell’arte e la sua formazione artistica avvenne prevalentemente nell’ambito familiare, sebbene non si abbiano notizie specifiche su un suo percorso accademico formale.

Lavorò con sia il marmo che il bronzo, producendo ritratti e opere note per il loro stile figurativo.

Tra le opere di Costantino Pandiani più celebri vale la pena annoverare il busto in marmo di una giovane donna e la coppia di sculture in marmo intitolata Menestrello e Diavoletto noto anche come ‘maschera’.

Le sue creazioni mostrano un’attenzione ai dettagli e un’impostazione stilistica tipica del gusto borghese dell’epoca, caratterizzata da una scultura di genere e ritrattistica.

Altra scultura celebre è la bucolica Vendemmia scolpita dall’artista nel 1876, oggi appartenente alla Galleria di Arte Moderna di Milano.

It was an August 25th like today when, in 1922, Milanese sculptor Costantino Pandiani passed away.

A member of an important family of 19th-century Milanese artists and industrialists, his artistic production is part of the academic and late-Romantic tradition of the time.

Costantino Pandiani was part of a renowned dynasty of sculptors that included his cousin Giovanni Pandiani (1809-1879) and his brother Antonio Pandiani (1838-1928), also a sculptor and later manager of the family foundry.

He grew up in a deeply artistic environment, and his artistic education took place primarily within his family, although there is no specific information about his formal academic training.

He worked in both marble and bronze, producing portraits and works noted for their figurative style.

Among Costantino Pandiani’s most famous works are the marble bust of a young woman and the pair of marble sculptures titled Minstrel and Devil, also known as the “mask.”

His creations demonstrate an attention to detail and a stylistic approach typical of the bourgeois taste of the time, characterized by genre sculpture and portraiture.

Another famous sculpture is the bucolic Grape Harvest, sculpted by the artist in 1876, now owned by the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan.
