Arte e natura: la pittura su pietra in mostra all’Accademia Carrara
‘Arte e natura. Pittura su pietra tra Cinque e Seicento’ è la nuova mostra che aprirà la stagione autunnale all’Accademia Carrara di Bergamo.
Dal 10 ottobre 2025 fino al 6 gennaio 2026 il museo accoglierà un’importante esposizione dedicata alla pittura su pietra.
Saranno oltre 60 le opere del percorso espositivo che racconteranno l’origine e la fortuna di questa tecnica tra Cinque e Seicento.
Nata con Sebastiano del Piombo attorno agli anni del Sacco di Roma, la pratica della pittura su pietra indaga l’affascinante rapporto tra natura e artificio chiedendosi dove finisca l’intervento umano e cominci quello della natura.
Una tecnica nuova e ricca di sfide che, rispetto alla pittura su tela, dava l’illusione di una maggiore resistenza ai pericoli e al tempo e si poneva come linguaggio degno di considerazione nel secolare duello tra pittura e scultura.
La mostra ‘Arte e natura. Pittura su pietra tra Cinque e Seicento’ accompagnerà i visitatori alla scoperta di un capitolo ancora troppo poco conosciuto della storia dell’arte svelando le potenzialità di una materia che, sin dalla notte dei tempi, ha ispirato valori di forza morale e fede, esercitato seduzioni alchemiche, incarnato simbologie e metafore, aspirato all’eternità.
Da Roma a Firenze, da Genova al Veneto, questa tecnica amata e progressivamente abbandonata nel giro di poco più di un secolo, ha coinvolto artisti come Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Bassano, Palma il Giovane, Antonio Tempesta e Salvator Rosa.
Le tre sezioni della mostra
L’esposizione prevede tre sezioni: pietre scure (lavagna, ardesia, pietra di paragone), pietre venate (paesine, diaspro), produzioni di lusso (alabastro, ametista, lapislazzulo).
A fianco a opere della Collezione della Carrara, arriveranno importanti prestiti da Galleria Borghese, Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Gallerie degli Uffizi, Palazzo Barberini, Musei Reali di Torino, Museo Real Bosco di Capodimonte, oltre a Fairlight Hall di Londra e altre collezioni pubbliche e private.

Art and Nature: Stone Painting on Display at the Accademia Carrara
‘Art and Nature. Stone Painting between the 16th and 17th Centuries’ is the new exhibition opening the fall season at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo.
From October 10, 2025, to January 6, 2026, the museum will host a major exhibition dedicated to stone painting.
Over 60 works will showcase the origins and popularity of this technique between the 16th and 17th centuries.
Emerging with Sebastiano del Piombo around the time of the Sack of Rome, stone painting explores the fascinating relationship between nature and artifice, questioning where human intervention ends and nature’s begins.
A new and challenging technique that, compared to painting on canvas, offered the illusion of greater resistance to danger and time, establishing itself as a worthy medium in the age-old duel between painting and sculpture.
The exhibition ‘Art and Nature. “Stone Painting between the 16th and 17th Centuries” will guide visitors on a journey through a still largely unknown chapter in the history of art, revealing the potential of a material that, since the dawn of time, has inspired values of moral strength and faith, exerted alchemical seduction, embodied symbolism and metaphor, and aspired to eternity.
From Rome to Florence, from Genoa to the Veneto, this beloved technique, gradually abandoned in the space of just over a century, has involved artists such as Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Bassano, Palma the Younger, Antonio Tempesta, and Salvator Rosa.
The three sections of the exhibition
The exhibition is divided into three sections: dark stones (black slate, slate, touchstone), veined stones (paesine, jasper), and luxury products (alabaster, amethyst, lapis lazuli).
Alongside works from the Carrara Collection, there will be important loans from the Galleria Borghese, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, the Uffizi Galleries, Palazzo Barberini, the Royal Museums of Turin, the Museo Real Bosco di Capodimonte, as well as Fairlight Hall in London and other public and private collections.
