Oggi voglio portarvi al di fuori dei confini nazionali, in Spagna, nel cuore di una delle chiese gotiche più affascinanti: la Cattedrale Primada de Santa María de Toledo.

Edificata in un lungo arco di tempo, tra il 1226 sotto il regno di Ferdinando III e il 1493, momento in cui governavano i re cattolici, accoglie opere straordinarie di El Greco, Goya e Velázquez ma non solo.

La cattedrale è celebre per il Transparente, l’opera più nota e apprezzata dell’architetto spagnolo Narciso Tomé. E’ senza dubbio uno dei capolavori stupefacenti del tardo barocco spagnolo e venne realizzato tra il 1729 e il 1732 su commissione dell’Arcivescovo Diego de Astorga, poi sepolto davanti all’altare.

Si tratta di un ricco complesso scultoreo realizzato in alabastro, marmi genovesi e spagnoli, apprezzabile nel deambulatorio della cattedrale, alle spalle dell’Altare Maggiore. Il suo scopo principale fu quello di dare luce dall’alto al tabernacolo creando un’atmosfera mistica.

Tomé pensò bene di aprire un oculo che consentisse di far discendere verso il basso la luce, per dare l’idea che il sacro Tabernacolo fosse illuminato da luce divina.

Raggi dorati, nuvole e angeli scolpiti in movimento sembra che contribuiscano a dare un senso di eterea leggerezza e forte spiritualità a quell’ambiente sacro.

Di fatto tutto il complesso mira a raffigurare l’Apoteosi del Santissimo Sacramento dell’Eucarestia.

Nella parte inferiore venne collocata la scultura della Vergine con il Bambino e rilievi di Davide e Achimelec.

Sul rilievo dell’incontro di Abigaille con Davide si può apprezzare anche la firma dello scultore Tomé. Nella parte superiore ci sono le sculture di Santa Leocadia e Santa Casilda e, sopra di loro, la raffigurazione dell’Ultima Cena.

Più in alto si vedono San Eugenio e San Ildefonso mentre a coronazione del retablo fanno la loro comparsa le tre virtù teologiche, scolpite in precedenza, nel 1677.

Un luogo straordinario che lo scultore Narciso Tomé contribuì a rendere unico e inimitabile.

The Spectacular Transparent Window of Toledo Cathedral

Today I want to take you beyond Spain’s borders, into the heart of one of the most majestic and fascinating Gothic churches: the Cathedral Primada de Santa María de Toledo.

Built over a long period of time, between 1226 under the reign of Ferdinand III and 1493, when the Catholic Monarchs ruled, it houses extraordinary works by El Greco, Goya, and Velázquez, among others.

The cathedral is famous for its Transparent Window, the most famous and appreciated work of Spanish architect Narciso Tomé. It is undoubtedly one of the most astonishing works of the Spanish late Baroque period and was built between 1729 and 1732, commissioned by Archbishop Diego de Astorga, who was later buried before the altar.

This rich sculptural complex, made of alabaster, Genoese, and Spanish marble, can be admired in the cathedral’s ambulatory, behind the High Altar. Its primary purpose was to illuminate the tabernacle from above, creating a mystical atmosphere.

Tomé decided to open an oculus that would allow the light to descend, giving the impression that the sacred tabernacle was illuminated by divine light.

Golden rays, clouds, and angels sculpted in motion seem to contribute to the sense of ethereal lightness and strong spirituality in that sacred space.

In fact, the entire complex aims to depict the Apotheosis of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist.

The lower section features a sculpture of the Virgin and Child and reliefs of David and Achimelech.

The relief of Abigaille’s encounter with David also bears the signature of the sculptor Tomé. At the top are the sculptures of Saint Leocadia and Saint Casilda, and above them, a depiction of the Last Supper.

Further up, Saint Eugene and Saint Ildefonso appear, while the three theological virtues, sculpted previously in 1677, appear to crown the altarpiece.

An extraordinary place that the sculptor Narciso Tomé helped make unique and inimitable.
