Un mio ritratto potete trovarlo anche ad Arezzo, nel cuore del Palazzo della Provincia. Fu Adolfo de Carolis a includere la mia effige nell’affresco “Ritratto di Uomini Illustri Aretini” tra il 1922 e il 1924 per la Sala del Consiglio.

In fondo, sebbene fossi fiorentino fin nella midolla, ero nato in terra aretina, a Caprese, quando il mi babbo Lodovico di quella cittadina ne era il podestà.

Quell’affresco sulla parete di fondo è una sorta di manifesto dell’identità aretina, voluto dall’ingegnere Giuseppe Paoli che aveva diretto il progetto di ristrutturazione del Palazzo per esaltare la ricchezza culturale di Arezzo. Paoli voleva rendere omaggio alla genialità di quelle terre celebrando i personaggi e le vocazioni lavorative del territorio, come l’agricoltura e la metallurgia.

L’opera, pensata con un gusto neorinascimentale, venne inaugurata assieme al Palazzo della Provincia rinnovato nel settembre del 1925.

La zona superiore ha riferimenti allegorici all’aritmetica, alla dialettica, retorica, alla grammatica e alle altre arti liberali mentre quella inferiore è dedicata ai grandi aretini.

Ecco, Adolfo de Carolis mi affrescò proprio al centro della scena, incastonato come pietra preziosa in un’edicola. Seduto e con le mani in una posa innaturale e assai forzata, volgo lo sguardo a sinistra mentre alle mie spalle si vede il Prigione che si ridesta.

Quella scultura che il Bonsanti disse che “lotta violentemente contro il sonno per raggiungere la consapevolezza“ l’avevo pensata e iniziata a realizzare per la Tomba di Giulio II, la tragedia della mia vita.

Poi come sapete il progetto venne ridotto e per quell’opera, così come per gli altri prigioni, non c’era più spazio. Oggi è collocata nel corridoio che porta alla Tribuna del David, alla Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze.

Se volete vedere anche questo mio ritratto realizzato da De Carolis, non vi rimane altro che andare ad Arezzo.

You can also find a portrait of me in Arezzo, in the heart of the Palazzo della Provincia. It was Adolfo de Carolis who included my effigy in the fresco “Portrait of Illustrious Men from Arezzo” between 1922 and 1924 for the Sala del Consiglio.

The upper area has allegorical references to arithmetic, dialectics, rhetoric, grammar and other liberal arts while the lower area is dedicated to the great men of Arezzo.

Here, Adolfo de Carolis frescoed me right in the center of the scene, set like a precious stone in a niche. Seated and with my hands in an unnatural and very forced pose, I turn my gaze to the left while behind me you can see the ‘Prisoner who awakens’.

That sculpture that Bonsanti said “violently fights against sleep to reach awareness” I had thought of and started to create for the Tomb of Julius II, the tragedy of my life.

Then, as you know, the project was reduced and for that work as well as for the other prisons there was no more space. Today it is located in the corridor that leads to the Tribuna del David, at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.
