In occasione delle celebrazioni del Corpus Domini, Camaiore torna a dare il meglio di sé con i tappeti di segatura. I maestri tappetari hanno lavorato dal sabato sera fino alle sei di questa mattina per realizzare le opere, quest’anno dedicate al Giubileo della Speranza.

Tra le distese di segatura colorata che qui vien chiamata pula, tanti i rimandi al rispetto per tutte le culture e le religioni del mondo e alla pace, tema mai come ora sentito.

E’ infatti notizia di queste ore che il presidente americano Trump abbia premuto l’acceleratore su un’escalation violenta di cui non sembra sia possibile vedere la fine, nemmeno a lungo raggio. Si sta scendendo sempre di più verso il baratro e ancora il fondo non l’abbiamo toccato.

Ogni tappeto racconta storie diverse. Il gruppo Palinsesto per esempio ha realizzato un tappeto a impostazione floreale che al centro lascia spazio per la riproduzione della Torre di Babele di Bruegel il Vecchio.

Per vedere i tappeti ultimati e senza troppa folla in giro, sono andato alle sei di questa mattina.

Pensate che addirittura, dalla sera del sabato fino a notte inoltrata, vige il senso unico a piedi e questo la dice lunga su quanto questo evento sia atteso da molte persone.

E’ un’arte effimera che dura il tempo di una notte: alle dieci di questa mattina i tappeti verranno distrutti al passaggio della processione del Corpus Domini e di quei capolavori non rimarrà altro che un mucchio informe di segatura.

Così mentre dalle pasticcerie del centro storico con i primi chiarori dell’alba si comincia a sentire il profumo dei cornetti appena sfornati, qualcuno che per terminare l’opera nemmeno ha cenato, preferisce sedersi sul soglio di una casa per mangiare una pizza da asporto.

E’ stata una notte lunga e faticosa per i tappetari ma è tutto l’anno che lavorano alla realizzazione dei decori degli stampi, che colorano la pula nelle tonalità desiderate.

Sapete, la tradizione dei tappeti di segatura a Camaiore ha origine nel XIX secolo, con la sostituzione dei fiori con la segatura a partire dagli anni ’30 del ‘900. 

Inizialmente, i tappeti erano realizzati con fiori e ramoscelli per accogliere i Borbone in villeggiatura in Versilia, ma la segatura successivamente divenne il materiale predominante.

Mi ha emozionato il tappeto realizzato dal Gruppo Scout che ha voluto mettere assieme le bandiere di tanti paesi del mondo, in cammino verso una pace che sembra essersi smarrita chissà dove, nascosta in tanto odio.

Sembra quella donna accovacciata e priva di orpelli il simbolo di quello che abbiamo perso sul cammino, strada facendo: l’umanità.

Larghi circa due metri ciascuno e con una lunghezza che può arrivare ai 50 metri, l’effimera bellezza dei tappeti di segatura sono un’impresa collettiva che coinvolge tutta la comunità.

Lavorano fianco a fianco per mesi famiglie, amici, associazioni: insomma, un’impresa di forte coesione sociale che serve a regalare al mondo un po’ di bellezza in più.

Corpus Domini: sawdust carpets in Camaiore

On the occasion of the Corpus Domini celebrations, Camaiore is back to give its best with sawdust carpets. The master carpet makers worked from Saturday evening until six o’clock this morning to create the works, this year dedicated to the Jubilee of Hope.

Among the expanses of colored sawdust that here is called chaff, there are many references to respect for all the cultures and religions of the world and to peace, a theme that has never been felt before.

In fact, it has been reported in these hours that the American president Trump has pressed the accelerator on a violent escalation of which it seems impossible to see the end, not even in the long term. We are descending ever further towards the abyss and we have not yet touched the bottom.

Each carpet tells different stories. The Palinsesto group, for example, has created a floral carpet that in the center leaves space for the reproduction of the Tower of Babel by Bruegel the Elder.

To see the finished carpets and without too many people around, I went at six this morning.

Just think that, from Saturday evening until late at night, there is a one-way street for walking and this says a lot about how much this event is anticipated by many people.

It is an ephemeral art that lasts the time of a night: at ten this morning the carpets will be destroyed when the Corpus Domini procession passes by and nothing will remain of those masterpieces but a shapeless pile of sawdust.

So while from the pastry shops of the historic center with the first light of dawn you begin to smell the scent of freshly baked croissants, someone who hasn’t even had dinner to finish the work, prefers to sit on the threshold of a house to eat a take-away pizza.

It was a long and tiring night for the carpet makers but they have been working all year to create the decorations of the molds, which color the chaff in the desired shades.

You know, the tradition of sawdust carpets in Camaiore dates back to the 19th century, with the replacement of flowers with sawdust starting in the 1930s. Initially, the carpets were made with flowers and twigs to welcome the Bourbons on holiday in Versilia, but sawdust later became the predominant material.

I was moved by the carpet made by the Scout Group that wanted to put together the flags of many countries in the world, on the way to a peace that seems to have been lost who knows where, hidden in so much hatred.

That crouched and undecorated woman seems to be the symbol of what we have lost along the way: humanity.

Each about two meters wide and with a length that can reach 50 meters, the ephemeral beauty of sawdust carpets is a collective undertaking that involves the entire community.

Families, friends, associations work side by side for months: in short, an enterprise of strong social cohesion that serves to give the world a little more beauty.
