Era il 14 giugno del 1514 quando firmai il contratto ufficiale per la realizzazione del Cristo Portacroce destinato alla Chiesa di Santa Maria sopra Minerva, a Roma.

Che dovessi metter mano a quel lavoro però già lo sapevo da tempo dato che l’anno precedente, nel maggio del 1513, già risulta un conto aperto dove Metello Vari m’aveva versato dei danari.

Sul contratto fu scritto nero su bianco che l’opera doveva essere a grandezza naturale, da realizzare in quattro anni di tempo. I committenti di quel lavoro erano tre anche se poi con uno solo di loro instaurai rapporti continuativi: Metello Vari de’ Porcari, Bernardo Cencio e Marzia Scapucci.

Di fatto i tre erano gli esecutori testamentari di Marta Porcari ma Metello Vari fu colui che seguì l’esecuzione del Cristo. Gli altri due non erano troppo felici di dover cedere parte della loro eredità per farmi scolpire quell’opera tanto desiderata dalla cara estinta.

Il compenso pattuito fu di 200 ducati d’oro.

Prima di mettere mano al Cristo Portacroce realizzai diversi studi a sanguigna su carta. Prima realizzai lo schizzo di tutto il Cristo a sanguigna poi, dopo aver girato il foglio dalla parte opposta, tracciai anche le gambe di una figura in piedi e che accennano un passo in avanti.

Pare che il foglio sia stato tagliato a metà ed è per questo che manca il resto delle gambe della versione sul recto e quella del busto sul verso.

Iniziai a metter mano all’opera in quel di Firenze, scegliendo per il corpo del Cristo i marmi del Polvaccio mentre per la croce divisa in tre pezzi, optai per un’altra tipologia di marmo, meno candido e meno perfetto.

Poco a poco sul volto emerse la brutta venatura nera e dovetti ricominciare il lavoro da capo. Il pazientissimo Metello Vari dovette attendere un tempo molto maggiore di quello che il contratto riportava per avere la sua opera.

June 14, 1514: the signing of the contract for the Christ Carrying the Cross

It was June 14, 1514 when I signed the official contract for the creation of the Christ Carrying the Cross destined for the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, in Rome.

However, I had already known for some time that I would have to start that work since the previous year, in May 1513, there was already an open account where Metello Vari had paid me some money.

The contract was written in black and white that the work had to be life-size, to be completed in four years. There were three clients for that work even though I only established ongoing relationships with one of them: Metello Vari de’ Porcari, Bernardo Cencio and Marzia Scapucci. In fact, the three were the executors of Marta Porcari’s will but Metello Vari was the one who followed the execution of the Christ. The other two were not too happy about having to give up part of their inheritance to let me sculpt that work so desired by the dear deceased.

The agreed fee was 200 gold ducats.

Before starting on the Christ Carrying the Cross, I made several studies in sanguine on paper. First I made a sketch of the whole Christ in sanguine, then, after turning the sheet of paper on the opposite side, I also traced the legs of a standing figure who is taking a step forward. It seems that the sheet of paper was cut in half and that is why the rest of the legs are missing from the version on the front and that of the bust on the back.

I began to get to work in Florence, choosing the Polvaccio marbles for the body of Christ, while for the cross divided into three pieces, I opted for another type of marble, less white and less perfect.

Little by little, the ugly black veining emerged on the face and I had to start the work from scratch. The very patient Metello Vari had to wait much longer than the contract stated to have his work.
