Artemisia Gentileschi arrivò a Firenze assieme al marito Battista Stiattesi agli inizi del 1613, quando da quattro anni regnava incontrastato Cosimo II de’ Medici.

Lui era un raffinatissimo amante delle arti. Sapeva di Musica, pittura, scienza, poesia e amava andare a cavallo. Quello che lo fregava era la salute assai cagionevole che appena gli concesse di oltrepassare la soglia dei trent’anni.

Artemisia rimase in città per otto anni ed ebbe modo di mettere la sua arte al servizio dei Medici e per chi gravitava attorno alla corte. Era solita frequentare l’élite culturale fiorentina tanto che nel 1616 fu la prima donna della storia a essere ammessa alla prestigiosa Accademia del Disegno.

L’artista a partire dal 1613 già risultava stipendiata da Cosimo II. Il successo fiorentino di Artemisia ha molto a che fare con me o meglio, con la mia discendenza. Mio pronipote Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane fu suo mecenate e protettore tanto che lei era solito chiamarlo compare e spesso si definiva come sua figliola.

Michelangelo le commissionò L’Inclinazione per decorare la galleria di Casa Buonarroti in mio onore ma la mise in contatto anche con altri importanti committenti. Dalle carte del mio pronipote si comprendono le sue capacità di mediazione per conto di Artemisia e il suo impegno costante per proporla ai potenziali acquirenti.

L’Inclinazione da non molto restaurata, è incastonata nel soffitto della Galleria di Casa Buonarroti. Artemisia dipinse una giovane donna con i piedi poggiati al di sopra di nuvole con alle spalle un cielo azzurro.

Le pose in mano una bussola magnetica e sul capo una stella. La bussola venne dipinta con particolari sorprendenti: la punta della capocchia, la sua inclinazione che permette di identificare e seguire la stella polare che fa da guida.

Artemisia era molto amica di Galileo e le sue scoperte molto influenzarono le sue scelte artistiche e iconografiche.

Artemisia Gentileschi arrived in Florence with her husband Battista Stiattesi at the beginning of 1613 when Cosimo II de’ Medici had reigned unchallenged for four years.

He was a very refined lover of the arts. He knew about music, painting, science, poetry and loved riding. What bothered him was his very poor health that barely allowed him to pass the threshold of thirty years.

Artemisia remained in the city for eight years and had the opportunity to put her art at the service of the Medici and those who gravitated around the court. She used to frequent the Florentine cultural elite so much and in 1616 she was the first woman in history to be admitted to the prestigious Accademia del Disegno.

The artist was already paid by Cosimo II starting in 1613. Artemisia’s Florentine success has a lot to do with me, or rather, with my lineage. My great-nephew Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger was her patron and protector, so much so that she used to call him “compare” and often described herself as his daughter.

Michelangelo commissioned her to paint The Inclination to decorate the gallery of Casa Buonarroti in my honor, but he also put her in touch with other important clients. From my great-nephew’s papers, we can understand his mediation skills on behalf of Artemisia and his constant commitment to proposing it to potential buyers.

The Inclination, recently restored, is set in the ceiling of the Gallery of Casa Buonarroti. Artemisia painted a young woman with her feet resting on clouds with a blue sky behind her.

He placed a magnetic compass in her hand and a star on her head. The compass was painted with surprising details: the tip of the head, its inclination that allows one to identify and follow the North Star that acts as a guide.

Artemisia was a close friend of Galileo and her discoveries greatly influenced her artistic and iconographic choices.
