La scultura del giorno che voglio proporvi oggi è ‘L’avvicinarsi della procella’, realizzata nel 1879 da Raffaele Belliazzi.

Lo scultore raffigurò due giovanissime contadine sorprese nei campi dall’arrivo di una tempesta improvvisa. La procella infatti è una violenta burrasca che spesso soggiunge rapidamente e diventa devastante.

La bambina e la ragazzina avanzano a capo chino mentre il vento gli spinge indietro gli abiti, appiccicandoli alla pelle. La più piccola si mette una mano davanti al volto per tentare di proteggersi mentre l’altra avanza con una fascina di legna sotto il braccio sinistro, tenendo per mano la piccolina.

La lavorazione del marmo di Belliazzi affascina per il gran numero di dettagli che è stato capace di scolpire in modo preciso. Basta guardare il modo con i quale è stata trattata la legna, con quei rami troncati o le vesti mosse dal vento.

L’opera fu presentata dell’artista per la prima volta nel 1877 alla terza Esposizione Nazionale di Napoli nella versione in gesso che poi fece da modello alla scultura in marmo oggi custodita al Museo Capodimonte di Napoli.

Raffaele Belliazzi: accenni biografici

Raffaele Belliazzi nacque a Napoli il 9 dicembre del 1835, la stessa città che lo vide spegnere il 23 maggio del 1917. Fu uno dei maggiori rappresentanti del verismo nella scultura italiana della seconda metà dell’Ottocento e dei primi del Novecento.

Nato in una famiglia legata al mondo dell’arte, diede il via alla sua attività aiutando il padre nella sua bottega. Iniziò a modellare di elementi decorativi architettonici. Successivamente si formò nello studio di Tommaso Solari, dove ebbe modo di acquisire solide basi per avviare la sua carriera da scultore. Fondamentale per la sua evoluzione artistica fu l’incontro con le tendenze veriste, ispirandosi ai modi di scolpire di Stanislao Lista e Alfonso Balzico.

Belliazzi si dedicò prevalentemente alla poetica del vero rappresentando soprattutto la quotidianità, la vita popolare e persone di umili origini. Le sue sculture sono permeate da un forte impatto emotivo e tutte curate nei minimi dettagli, proprio come ‘L’avvicinarsi della procella’.

L’abilità che ebbe nel riprodurre scene di vita reali, gli valse un immediato successo, soprattutto a Napoli ma anche a livello nazionale e internazionale. Nel corso della vita partecipò a tante esposizioni sia dentro che fuori i confini italiani.

Tra i riconoscimenti più importanti che ricevette, vale la pena annoverare la medaglia d’oro all’Esposizione Universale di Parigi del 1879, che gli valse anche l’onorificenza di Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Corona d’Italia.

Sculpture of the day: The Approaching Storm by Raffaele Belliazzi

The sculpture of the day that I want to propose to you today is ‘The Approaching Storm’, created in 1879 by Raffaele Bellizzi.

The sculptor depicted two very young peasant girls surprised in the fields by the arrival of a sudden storm. In fact, the storm is a violent storm that often comes quickly and becomes devastating.

The little girl and the young girl advance with their heads bowed while the wind pushes their clothes back, sticking them to their skin. The younger one puts one hand in front of her face to try to protect herself while the other advances with a bundle of wood under her left arm, holding the little girl by the hand.

Belliazzi’s marble workmanship is fascinating for the large number of details that he was able to sculpt in a precise way. Just look at the way the wood was treated, with those broken branches or the clothes moved by the wind.

The work was presented by the artist for the first time in 1877 at the third National Exhibition of Naples in the first plaster version which then served as a model for the marble sculpture now kept at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples.

Raffaele Belliazzi: biographical notes

Raffaele Belliazzi was born in Naples on December 9, 1835, the same city that saw him pass away on May 23, 1917. He was one of the major representatives of realism in Italian sculpture in the second half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.

Born into a family linked to the world of art, he began his activity by helping his father in his workshop. He began to model decorative architectural elements. He later trained in the studio of Tommaso Solari, where he was able to acquire solid foundations to start his career as a sculptor. During his life he participated in many exhibitions both inside and outside the Italian borders. Among the most important awards he received, it is worth mentioning the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1879, which also earned him the honor of Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy.
