Così, senza far troppo rumore, il mio Cristo Risorto se n’è volato a Osaka all’Expo 2025.

Si tratta della prima versione che scolpii su commissione di Metello Vari, esecutore testamentario di Marta Porcari.

Il 14 giugno del 1514 firmai il contratto per dar forma a quel Cristo Portacroce, opera a grandezza naturale che avrei dovuto realizzare in quattro anni di tempo. Il compenso pattuito fu di 200 ducati d’oro e l’opera, una volta terminata, sarebbe stata posizionata nella Chiesa di Santa Maria sopra Minerva: la chiesa romana più prossima al Pantheon.

Le cose poi non sempre vanno come si pensa e la questione si complicò terribilmente in modo inatteso.

A lavoro quasi ultimato fece capolino una brutta venatura nera che intaccava il viso, il collo e la barba del Cristo. Provai a integrare quella riga nelle linee di espressione che danno carattere al viso ma il pelo nero scendeva troppo in basso e mi vidi costretto ad abbandonare il lavoro con grande dispiacere.

Mi procurai così un nuovo blocco proveniente sempre dalle cave di Carrara del Polvaccio e ricominciai tutto da capo.

Il Vari, che ebbe con me una pazienza al pari di quella di Giobbe, mi scriveva spesso per avere notizie della sua opera che tardava ad arrivare.

Alla fine, per ricompensarlo del tanto tempo aspettato e del fatto che la seconda versione a causa di varie vicissitudini non era riuscita come io desideravo, gli regalai anche la prima versione difettata, quella che oggi si trova a Osaka.

Da lungi è custodita nella chiesa del Monastero di San Vincenzo a Bassano Romano ma spesso è fuori per prestiti. Arrivata per la prima volta in Giappone, rimarrà esposta ai visitatori per tutta la durata dell’Expo nel Padiglione Italia dalla Regione Lazio.

My Veined Risen Christ Flew to Osaka

So, without making too much noise, my Risen Christ flew to Osaka to Expo 2025.

This is the first version that I sculpted on commission from Metello Vari, executor of Marta Porcari’s will.

On June 14, 1514, I signed the contract to give shape to that Christ Carrying the Cross, a life-size work that I was supposed to create in four years. The agreed fee was 200 gold ducats and the work, once finished, would be placed in the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva: the Roman church closest to the Pantheon.

Things don’t always go as you think and the matter unexpectedly became terribly complicated.

When the work was almost finished, an ugly black vein appeared that affected Christ’s face, neck and beard. I tried to integrate that line into the expression lines that give character to the face but the black hair fell too low and I was forced to abandon the work with great regret.

So I got a new block from the Carrara quarries of Polvaccio and started all over again.

Vari, who had with me a patience on a par with that of Job, often wrote to me to get news of his work that was slow in arriving.

In the end, to reward him for the long wait and the fact that the second version due to various vicissitudes had not turned out as I had wanted, I also gave him the first defective version, the one that is now in Osaka.

It has been kept for a long time in the church of the Monastery of San Vincenzo in Bassano Romano but is often out on loan. Arriving for the first time in Japan, it will remain on display to visitors for the entire duration of the Expo in the Italian Pavilion of the Lazio Region.
