Restaurata l’antica Bibbia latina di Cavallini
È stata restaurata l’antica Bibbia latina miniata da Pietro Cavallini tra il primo e il secondo decennio del Trecento, con più di 100 miniature istoriate e figurate, 167 iniziali ornate quasi tutte con foglia d’oro e oltre 270 calligrafiche.
Il codice in questione è uno dei capolavori assoluti della miniatura italiana del Trecento.
Assieme alla preziosissima Bibbia di Cavallini, nella più antica Università della Sicilia, ovvero quella di Catania risalente al 1445, è stata restaurata anche parte dei 200mila incunaboli e manoscritti custoditi nella biblioteca.
Tanto piccola quanto preziosa e rara, la Bibbia miniata da Cavallini di fatto è uno dei volumi più conosciuti nel mondo ed è ritenuta, a ragione, una delle cinque Bibbie più belle del mondo.
Il libro fu comprato sul mercato romano da Placido Scamacca tra il 1740 e il 1750 per destinarlo alla Biblioteca del monastero di San Nicolò l’Arena di Catania.
Il volume è miniato in oro ed è formato da 440 carte con il Vecchio e Nuovo Testamento, le Epistole a Prologhi di San Girolamo.
Le scritte sono disposte su due colonne di 56 linee ciascuna, scritte con una calligrafia tipicamente gotica. Come accennato prima, le iniziali sono accuratamente istoriate e sono presenti fregi marginali costituiti decorati con motivi spesso circoscritti in medaglioni.
La Bibbia Cavallini è stata assemblata in un centro di produzione libraria di alto livello e si comprende ciò attraverso la qualità della carta e la quantità di illustrazioni presenti.
Probabilmente i miniatori furono almeno tre, guidati da un quarto che coordinò i lavori. Proprio quel quarto è stato identificato in Pietro Cavallini mediante l’utilizzo dello spazio, per la resa dei panneggi e degli incarnati delle figure dipinte.

Cavallini’s ancient Latin Bible restored
The ancient Latin Bible illuminated by Pietro Cavallini between the first and second decade of the fourteenth century has been restored, with more than 100 historiated and illustrated miniatures, 167 initials decorated almost all with gold leaf and over 270 calligraphic ones.
The code in question is one of the absolute masterpieces of Italian miniature of the fourteenth century.
Together with the very precious Cavallini Bible, in the oldest University in Sicily, namely that of Catania dating back to 1445, part of the 200 thousand incunabula and manuscripts kept in the library have also been restored.
As small as it is precious and rare, the Bible illuminated by Cavallini is in fact one of the most famous volumes in the world and is rightly considered one of the five most beautiful Bibles in the world.
The book was purchased on the Roman market by Placido Scamacca between 1740 and 1750 to be given to the Library of the monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena in Catania.
The volume is illuminated in gold and consists of 440 cards with the Old and New Testament, the Epistles and Prologues of Saint Jerome.
The writings are arranged in two columns of 56 lines each, written in a typically Gothic calligraphy. As mentioned before, the initials are carefully historiated and there are marginal friezes made up of motifs often circumscribed in medallions.
The Cavallini Bible was assembled in a high-level book production center and this can be understood through the quality of the paper and the quantity of illustrations present.
There were probably at least three illuminators, led by a fourth who coordinated the work. That fourth was identified as Pietro Cavallini through the use of space, for the rendering of the draperies and the flesh tones of the painted figures.
