Michelangelo 550: mi rifiuto di tornare a Roma nel dipinto monocromo del Vignali
In occasione del 550 anni dalla mia nascita vi propongo un’opera che ha me per protagonista e che potete apprezzare a Casa Buonarroti.
Il titolo del piccolo dipinto a olio su parete è ‘Michelangelo si rifiuta di tornare a Roma‘ e venne realizzato Jacopo Vignali nel 1628.
In quegli 82 centimetri d’altezza per 155 di larghezza, il Vignali riuscì a raccontare per immagini monocromo il momento in cui venni raggiunto dai messi papali a Poggibonsi.
Nel momento in cui papa Giulio II si rifiutò per ben tre volte di ricevermi quando tornai da Carrara con parte dei marmi per la sua grandiosa tomba, presi in fretta e furia quattro cose da casa e partii a cavallo alla volta di Firenze.
Il papa mi doveva molti denari per quel trasporto che m’era costato un occhio della testa: avevo pagato di tasca i pover’uomini che avevano lavorato per me e quei soldi doveva restituirmeli.
Ero riuscito a entrare nel Palazzo Apostolico ma un palafreniere, su ordine di Giulio II, mi sbarrò la strada. “Voi direte al Papa, che se da qui inanzi mi vorà, mi cercherà altrove” e me ne andai.
I messi papali mi raggiunsero nottetempo a Poggibonsi ma lì non avevano alcun potere: era già territorio fiorentino. Provarono a convincermi di tornare con suppliche di ogni tipo ma non ne volli sapere.
Ecco, il Vignali raffigurò proprio il momento in cui gli inviati dal papa provarono a farmi tornare a Roma ma senza ottenere ciò che Giulio II gli aveva comandato.

Michelangelo 550: I refuse to return to Rome in Vignali’s monochrome painting
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I propose a work that has me as the protagonist and that you can appreciate at Casa Buonarroti.
The title of the small oil painting on the wall is ‘Michelangelo refuses to return to Rome’ and was made by Jacopo Vignali in 1628.
In those 82 centimeters high and 155 wide, Vignali managed to tell in monochrome images the moment in which I was reached by the papal messengers in Poggibonsi.
At the moment in which Pope Julius II refused to receive me three times when I returned from Carrara with part of the marble for his grandiose tomb, I quickly grabbed four things from home and left on horseback for Florence.
The Pope owed me a lot of money for that transport that had cost me an arm and a leg: I had paid the poor men who had worked for me out of my pocket and he had to give me back that money.
I had managed to enter the Apostolic Palace but a groom, on the orders of Julius II, blocked my path. “You will tell the Pope that if he wants me from here on, he will look for me elsewhere” and I left.
The papal messengers reached me at night in Poggibonsi but they had no power there: it was already Florentine territory. They tried to convince me to return but I wouldn’t hear of it.
Here, Vignali depicted the very moment in which the papal envoys tried to convince me to return to Rome but without obtaining what Julius II had ordered.
