25 marzo: Capodanno fiorentino a Palazzo Pretorio, ingresso 1 euro
Fino al 1749 a Firenze e nel resto della Toscana il capodanno si festeggiava il 25 marzo, in concomitanza con l’Annunciazione. Il primo giorno dell’anno veniva fatto coincidere infatti l’annuncio dell’Arcangelo Gabriele a Maria.
“Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio. Ecco concepirai un figlio, lo darai alla luce e lo chiamerai Gesù. Sarà grande e chiamato Figlio dell‘Altissimo; il Signore Dio gli darà il trono di Davide suo padre e regnerà per sempre sulla casa di Giacobbe e il suo regno non avrà fine”.
L’inizio della gravidanza della Madonna, fatto risalire a nove mesi esatti prima del 25 dicembre, era il primo giorno del nuovo anno. Le cose cambiarono sotto il papato di Gregorio XII che volle riformare il calendario, entrato in vigore qualche anno dopo, il 4 ottobre 1582.
Il Museo di Palazzo Pretorio di Prato torna a festeggiare il capodanno proponendo ai visitatori un evento speciale, domenica 23 marzo. Aprirà infatti le sue porte ai visitatori al costo simbolico di un euro.
Sarà possibile così vedere i preziosi capolavori che custodisce della collezione permanente ma anche la mostra temporanea “Fiorello Tosoni. Una vita per l’arte”, che terminerà il 30 marzo.
Non solo. Nel corso della giornata, alle ore 17:00 verrà effettuata una visita guidata per far conoscere al pubblico le tante Annunciazioni raffigurate nelle opere del museo: da Filippo Lippi ad Alessandro Franchi, passando per Giovanni da Milano e tanti altri artisti.

L’Annunciazione del Franchi
Il mirabile disegno che vedete, adoperato dal Museo di Palazzo Pretorio per promuovere l’iniziativa, venne realizzato da Alessandro Franchi: artista pratese a cui vennero affidate numerose commissioni in città.
L’Annunciazione di Franchi risale al 1884 circa e fa parte di un cospicuo nucleo di circa 330 disegni e 60 cartoni che l’artista stesso donò alla città di Prato. Osservando il disegno è evidente come Franchi si ispirò a ben più noti modelli quattrocenteschi fiorentini di artisti come Filippo Lippi.
Il disegno fu realizzato in vista del dipinto dell’Annunciazione del Franchi che si trova nella cappella Raffo del cimitero della Misericordia a Siena.

March 25: Florentine New Year’s Eve at Palazzo Pretorio, admission 1 euro
Until 1749, in Florence and the rest of Tuscany, New Year’s Eve was celebrated on March 25, coinciding with the Annunciation. The first day of the year was in fact made to coincide with the announcement of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary.
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
The beginning of the Madonna’s pregnancy, traced back to exactly nine months before December 25, was the first day of the new year. Things changed under the papacy of Gregory XII who wanted to reform the calendar, which came into force a few years later, on October 4, 1582.
It will be possible to see the precious masterpieces that it houses in the permanent collection but also the temporary exhibition “Fiorello Tosoni. A life for art”, which will end on March 30.
Not only that. During the day, at 5:00 pm, a guided tour will be held to introduce the public to the many Annunciations depicted in the museum’s works: from Filippo Lippi to Alessandro Franchi, passing through Giovanni da Milano and many other artists.

The Annunciation by Franchi
The wonderful drawing you see, used by the Palazzo Pretorio Museum to promote the initiative, was created by Alessandro Franchi: an artist from Prato who was entrusted with numerous commissions in the city.
The Annunciation by Franchi dates back to around 1884 and is part of a large group of around 330 drawings and 60 cartoons that the artist himself donated to the city of Prato. Observing the drawing, it is clear that Franchi was inspired by much more well-known fifteenth-century Florentine models by artists such as Filippo Lippi.
The drawing was created in view of the painting of the Annunciation by Franchi which is located in the Raffo chapel in the cemetery of the Misericordia in Siena.
