La tragica storia di Raimondina e il busto di Luigi Ferrari
La scultura di cui voglio parlarvi oggi è busto che ritrae Raimondina Thurn-Hofer e Valsassina, scolpito da Luigi Ferrari.
La storia di questo busto è commovente e inizia con l’incontro di Matteo e Raimondina Thurn-Hofer e Valsassina avvenuto a Venezia, nel periodo del carnevale del lontano 1835.
I due si incontrarono durante il ballo in maschera organizzato dal governatore trentino Giovanni Battista Spaur.
Raimondina era una ragazza bella e aveva alle spalle una famiglia prestigiosa, assai sensibile alla cultura. Aveva avuto modo di seguire la sua naturale inclinazione per il disegno ma era anche molto portata per il canto e la musica, seguita dal ritrattista Ludovico Lipparini, dal poeta Luigi Pezzoli e dal pianista Antonio Fanna. Raimondina poteva contare sugli insegnamenti di grandi e talentuosi professionisti.
I due giovani si innamorarono perdutamente ma la loro storia ebbe un tragico epilogo. Avevano entrambi rapporti familiari con la casa reale d’Asburgo, con i duchi di Modena e frequentavano artisti e intellettuali dell’epoca.
“Oh che dolce, che bella sorpresa Matteo mio! il tuo ritratto m’è la cosa la più cara al mondo, dopo l’originale però. Provo un certo non so che nel mirarlo, che mi trasporta nel settimo cielo. La tua immagine m’è tanto presente, l’ò sì fortemente scolpita nel cuore e nella mente, però non posso fare a meno, anche scrivendo, di guardar sempre e poi sempre la cara tua effigie, ma tu sei molto più bello del ritratto. Io e tutti i miei lo trovano assomigliante, ma molto meno bello dell’originale. […] Oggi mi deciderò per il ritratto e lo farò subito subito cominciare. Addio, Matteo mio, in tutta fretta t’invio mille tendresses. Mille sguardi poi concederò al tuo ritratto. Tua per sempre“
Lettera di Raimondina Thurn-Hofer e Valsassina a Matteo Thun, Venezia, 21 agosto 1838:
I due convolarono a nozze e non molto tempo dopo Raimondina e il consorte attendevano un figlio. Durante il parto però, la giovane di 22 anni e il figlio morirono.
Nel 1841 venne commissionato dal consorte il busto di Raimondina allo scultore Luigi Ferrari. Lo scultore si premurò di realizzare un ritratto fedele di Raimondina, senza snaturarle il profilo aquilino del naso.
Il volto è incorniciato da una raffinata acconciatura che denota proprio la bravura dello scultore. Due trecce incorniciano il capo staccandosi dal resto della capigliatura: un lavoro delicato e complesso. Fece da modello per la scultura il ritratto che aveva realizzato solo tre anni prima Ludovico Lipparini.
Dettaglio degno di nota è anche la camicia che si intravede al di sotto della veste, con il bordo in pizzo.
Il busto appartiene alle collezioni di Castel Thun.

Sculpture of the day: the moving portrait of Raimondina by Luigi Ferrari
The sculpture I want to talk to you about today is a bust portraying Raimondina Thurn-Hofer and Valsassina, sculpted by Luigi Ferrari.
The story of this bust is moving and begins with the meeting of Matteo and Raimondina Thurn-Hofer and Valsassina in Venice, during the carnival period of the distant 1835.
The two met during the masked ball organized by the governor of Trentino Giovanni Battista Spaur. Raimondina was a beautiful girl and came from a prestigious family, very sensitive to culture. She had had the opportunity to follow her natural inclination for drawing but she was also very good at singing and music, followed by the portraitist Ludovico Lipparini, the poet Luigi Pezzoli and the pianist Antonio Fanna. Raimondina could count on the teachings of great and talented professionals.
The two young people fell madly in love but their story had a tragic epilogue. They both had family relations with the royal house of Habsburg, with the dukes of Modena and frequented artists and intellectuals of the time.
“Oh what a sweet, what a beautiful surprise, my Matteo! Your portrait is the dearest thing in the world to me, after the original though. I feel a certain I don’t know what when I look at it, that transports me to seventh heaven. Your image is so present to me, I have it so strongly engraved in my heart and mind, but I can’t help but, even when writing, always look at your dear effigy, but you are much more beautiful than the portrait. I and all my family find it similar, but much less beautiful than the original. […] Today I will decide on the portrait and I will have it started right away. Goodbye, my Matteo, I am sending you a thousand tendresses in all haste. Then I will grant a thousand glances to your portrait. Yours forever“
Letter from Raimondina Thurn-Hofer and Valsassina to Matteo Thun, Venice, August 21, 1838.
The two got married and not long after Raimondina and her husband were expecting a child. However, during childbirth, the 22-year-old woman and her son died.
In 1841, her husband commissioned the bust of Raimondina from the sculptor Luigi Ferrari. The sculptor took care to create a faithful portrait of Raimondina, without distorting the aquiline profile of her nose.
The face is framed by a refined hairstyle that shows the sculptor’s skill. Two braids frame the head, detaching themselves from the rest of the hair: a delicate and complex work. The model for the sculpture was the portrait that Ludovico Lipparini had made only three years earlier.
Another noteworthy detail is the shirt that can be glimpsed under the dress, with the lace edge.
The bust belongs to the collections of Castel Thun.
