Il dipinto del giorno: la Comunione degli Apostoli del Palmezzano
Il dipinto del giorno di cui voglio parlarvi oggi è la Comunione degli Apostoli, la pala d’altare dipinta da Marco Palmezzano nel 1506.
Venne realizzata per l’altare maggiore del Duomo di Santa Croce di Forlì e oggi appartiene alla collezione dei Musei Civici di San Domenico di Forlì.
Nella Cronaca Albertina si legge che l’opera fu collocata sull’altare maggiore il primo giorno d’ottobre del 1506, in occasione della visita in città di Papa Giulio II della Rovere.
Il dipinto raffigura il momento in cui Cristo offre l’Eucaristia agli apostoli durante l’Ultima Cena. Il Palmezzano ambienta la scena in un’arcata con decorazioni dorate, dove gli apostoli sono inginocchiati davanti a Cristo che tiene in mano l’ostia. Alle spalle di Cristo si vede San Giovanni in piedi che tiene il calice con la mano sinistra.

Si tratta di una delle opere più complesse dell’artista che mette in luce alcune problematiche dell’artista. Per esempio in primo piano le figure sono un po’ troppo accalcate e lo spazio è poco definito. A essere interessante è però l’utilizzo del colore e il modo in cui ha dipinto le decorazioni a grottesca su fondo oro.
Nel corso dei secoli la pala del Palmezzano fu spostata diverse volte. Alla fine del Seicento fu tolta dalla collocazione originale e ricollocata successivamente nella Cappella di San Valeriano fino al 1840, anno in cui fu portata nel Palazzo Vescovile.
Il capolavoro del Palmezzano nel 1851 fu acquistata dal Capitolo del Duomo ed esposta nel Museo Civico di San Domenico.

The painting of the day that I want to talk to you about today is the Communion of the Apostles, the altarpiece painted by Marco Palmezzano in 1506.
It was created for the high altar of the Cathedral of Santa Croce in Forlì and today belongs to the collection of the Civic Museums of San Domenico in Forlì.
In the Cronaca Albertina we read that the work was placed on the high altar on the first day of October 1506, on the occasion of the visit to the city of Pope Julius II della Rovere.
The painting depicts the moment in which Christ offers the Eucharist to the apostles during the Last Supper. Palmezzano sets the scene in an arch with golden decorations, where the apostles are kneeling in front of Christ who holds the host in his hand. This is one of the artist’s most complex works that highlights some of the artist’s problems. For example, in the foreground the figures are a bit too crowded and the space is poorly defined. What is interesting, however, is the use of color and the way in which he painted the grotesque decorations on a gold background.
Over the centuries, Palmezzano’s altarpiece was moved several times. At the end of the seventeenth century it was removed from its original location and subsequently relocated in the Chapel of San Valeriano until 1840, the year in which it was taken to the Bishop’s Palace.
Palmezzano’s masterpiece was purchased by the Cathedral Chapter in 1851 and exhibited in the Civic Museum of San Domenico.
