Il 19 gennaio del 1518 stipulai contratto con papa Leone X per la realizzazione della facciata della Basilica di San Lorenzo di Firenze.

Il compenso? 40mila ducati d’oro larghi per un tempo di otto anni.

Beh, non è tutto oro quel che luccica recita l’adagio e mai fu più vero che in questo caso. Non vi tragga in inganno la cifra elevata perché lì dentro si celava ogni costo che avrei dovuto sostenere pagando di tasca.

“Sia manifesto a qualunque persona come hoggi, questo dì XIX di gennio MDXVIII la Santità di Nostro Signore, papa Leone X, ha allogato a Michelagniolo di Ludovico di Bonarroti Simoni sculptore fiorentino, el quale così accepta, lo edifitio o nova fabbrica et muramento della faccia di S.to Lorenzo di Firenze, ne’ modi et patti che disotto si diranno”.

Come accennato prima, per la cifra di 40mila ducati, erano compresi l’acquisto, l’estrazione e il trasporto di tutti i marmi, la realizzazione delle diverse sculture di mano mia, dei fregi e qualsiasi altra cosa avessi dovuto pagare per la facciata.

Una grande impresa quella della facciata che comprendeva la realizzazione di 8 colonne di marmo scanalate, 4 sculture a tutti tondo alte cinque braccia fiorentine e rilievi in marmo e in bronzo.

In più punti del contratto viene ribadito il concetto che qualsiasi spesa dovesse essere a carico mio.

“Le quali tutte cose ditto Michelagniolo toglie a fare per ditto prezo e tempo, in tutto et per tutto a sue spese, facendo le figure di sua mano et così le ditte storie…”

Dopo la firma del pontefice fatta solo con la unica lettera J come Johannes, l’iniziale del nome del pontefice in latino al secolo Giovanni di Lorenzo de’ Medici, sottoscrissi l’accordo di mio pugno.

“Io Michelagniolo di Lodovicho Simoni, sopradicto, son chontento a quanto in questa scricta si chontiene e per fede di ciò mi son soctoschricto di mia mano propria, in Roma, questo dì sopra decto”.

January 19, 1518: the contract for the facade of San Lorenzo, at my expense

On January 19, 1518 I signed a contract with Pope Leo X for the construction of the facade of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence. The fee? 40 thousand gold ducats for a period of eight years.

Well, all that glitters is not gold, the adage goes, and never was it truer than in this case. Don’t be fooled by the high price, because it hid all the costs that I would have had to pay out of pocket.

“Let it be clear to everyone that today, this day of January 19, 1518, the Holiness of Our Lord, Pope Leo X, has commissioned the Florentine sculptor Michelagniolo di Ludovico di Bonarroti Simonim, who thus accepts, the building or new construction and construction of the facade of San Lorenzo in Florence, in the ways and conditions that will be described below.”

As mentioned before, the sum of 40 thousand ducats included the purchase, extraction and transport of all the marbles, the creation of the various sculptures by my hand, the friezes and anything else I had to pay for the facade.

A great undertaking that of the facade which included the creation of 8 fluted marble columns, 4 sculptures in the round five Florentine arms high and reliefs in marble and bronze.

In several points of the contract the concept is reiterated that any expense was to be paid by me.

“All of which things said Michelangelo undertakes to do for the said price and time, in all and for all at his own expense, making the figures by his hand and also the said stories…”

After the signature of the pontiff made only with the single letter J as Johannes, the initial of the name of the pontiff in Latin in the century Giovanni di Lorenzo de’ Medici, I signed the agreement in my own hand.
