Ritrovare un dipinto rinascimentale nascosto dietro a un muro è evento raro eppure qualche volta accade.

Nella Cripta del Duomo di Parma una ventina di anni fa è tornato alla luce un affresco e oggi, grazie a un delicato intervento di restauro portato a termine da poco, i visitatori avranno la possibilità di rivedere dopo 500 anni la Madonna delle Grazie con il Bambino e Santi.

L’affresco nascosto per secoli potrà essere ammirato dal 7 dicembre fino al 25 marzo su prenotazione, assieme alla vicina Cappella Ravacaldi che abitualmente è chiusa al pubblico.

La pittura murale fu rinvenuta durante la campagna di restauri avviata nel 2004. Come accade in molte chiese, anche la Cattedrale di Parma nel corso dei secoli ha subito diverse modifiche e trasformazioni.

La parete in muratura del braccio nord però ha protetto quell’opera dagli interventi successivi anche se però l’alto tasso di umidità ha causato distacchi e alterazioni delle parti che vennero aggiunte a secco.

Il dipinto risale ai primi anni del Cinquecento ed è stato notato come la porzione di affresco a destra della Madonna corrisponda a quella identica che fu dipinta su una delle pareti della Cappella Ravacaldi.

I visitatori che vorranno vedere questo lavoro inedito, verranno guidati alla scoperta dell’affresco e nella Cappella Ravacadi dove potranno assistere anche a un’introduzione video che racconta alcune caratteristiche della pittura murale ritrovata e propone ipotesi relative a chi possa averla realizzata.

Parma: after 500 years the Madonna delle Grazie is visible again

Finding a Renaissance painting hidden behind a wall is a rare event, yet it does happen sometimes.

In the Crypt of the Cathedral of Parma, about twenty years ago, a fresco was brought to light and today, thanks to a delicate restoration work recently completed, visitors will have the opportunity to see the Madonna delle Grazie with Child and Saints again after 500 years.

The fresco, hidden for centuries, can be admired from December 7th until March 25th by reservation, together with the nearby Cappella Ravacaldi which is usually closed to the public.

The mural painting was discovered during the restoration campaign started in 2004. As happens in many churches, the Cathedral of Parma has also undergone various modifications and transformations over the centuries.

The masonry wall of the north arm, however, protected that work from subsequent interventions, although the high level of humidity has caused detachments and alterations of the parts that were added dry.

The painting dates back to the early 16th century and it has been noted that the portion of the fresco to the right of the Madonna corresponds to the identical one that was painted on one of the walls of the Ravacaldi Chapel.

Visitors who want to see this unpublished work will be guided to discover the fresco and the Ravacaldi Chapel where they can also watch a video introduction that describes some of the characteristics of the rediscovered mural painting and proposes hypotheses regarding who may have created it.
