Raggiungendo i 95milioni di dollari stimati diventerebbe il nuovo record dell’artista segnando un successo straordinario per la casa d’aste che in questo ultimo periodo ha visto rallentare le sue vendite.

Il dipinto di Magritte

Il dipinto che verrà battuto all’asta è di uno dei 27 dipinti appartenenti alla collezione L’empire de lumières e ha come tema centrale una casa illuminata da un lampione in uno scenario notturno. Tutta la serie viene considerata iconica del surrealismo.

Il dipinto in questione, realizzato da Magritte nel 1954, arriva direttamente dall’eredità dell’interior designer Mica Ertgun e consorte di Ahmet Ertgun, cofondatore dell’Atlantic Record nonché attento collezionista d’arte.

L’opera a olio, più di altre, mostra la filosofia estetica dell’artista nella sua sobrietà, così come ha precisato il vicepresidente di Christie’s Max Carter: “Icona del surrealismo, il Magritte della Ertegun è probabilmente il più bello, abilmente realizzato e inquietantemente affascinante della serie”.

La stima

Se la stima di 95milioni di dollari degli esperti fosse mantenuta o addirittura superasse le aspettative, L’Empire des Lumières, diverrebbe il dipinto più costoso di Magritte mai battuto all’asta.

L’asta a New York

L’asta avrà luogo il 19 novembre a New York, durante una serata dedicata totalmente alla collezione Ertegun. Un portavoce di Christie’s ha precisato che una parte significativa dei proventi sarà destinata a iniziative filantropiche.

A rare painting by René Magritte will soon be auctioned by Christie’s and it is expected to fetch a record figure of 95 million dollars.

The rare painting from the iconic L’empire des lumières series by René Magritte could be auctioned for a dizzying sum this fall. Reaching the estimated 95 million dollars it would become a new record for the artist, marking an extraordinary success for the auction house that has seen its sales slow down in recent times.

The painting that will be auctioned is one of the 27 paintings belonging to the L’empire de lumières collection and has as its central theme a house illuminated by a street lamp in a night scene. The entire series is considered iconic of surrealism.

The painting in question, created by Magritte in 1954, comes directly from the estate of interior designer Mica Ertgun and wife of Ahmet Ertgun, co-founder of Atlantic Record and a keen art collector.

The oil work, more than others, shows the artist’s aesthetic philosophy in its sobriety, as Christie’s vice president Max Carter pointed out: “An icon of surrealism, Ertegun’s Magritte is probably the most beautiful, skillfully crafted and disturbingly fascinating of the series”.

The estimate

If the experts’ estimate of 95 million dollars is maintained or even exceeds expectations, L’Empire des Lumières would become the most expensive painting by Magritte ever sold at auction.

The auction in New York

The auction will take place on November 19 in New York, during an evening dedicated entirely to the Ertegun collection. A spokesperson for Christie’s has specified that a significant portion of the proceeds will be donated to philanthropic initiatives.
