Non è vero che a nessuno volli insegnare l’arte mia
Mica è vero che mai volli insegnare a nessuno l’arte mia. Se poi chi da me apprese non raggiunse vette elevatissime nell’arte della pittura o della scultura, quello, è un altro conto.
Sapete quante dicerie son state messe in giro sul mio conto e quante ancora ne verranno propinate ai posteri? Una moltitudine e di alcune nemmeno ne sono a conoscenza.
“Né è vero quel che molti gli appongano, che non abbia voluto insegnare, anzi ciò ha fatto
volentieri, e io l’ho conosciuto in me stesso, al qual egli ha aperto ogni suo secreto che a tal arte
s’appertiene, ma la disgrazia ha voluto che si sia battuto o a subietti poco atti o, se pure sono stati atti, non abbiano perseverato, ma, poi che sotto la disciplina sua saranno stati pochi mesi, si
sien tenuti maestri”. Queste sono le parole che scrisse il Condivi nella mia biografia in merito a questa faccenda.
Certamente non mi piaceva insegnare a tutti. Non avevo il tempo per farlo ma, a dirla tutta, nemmeno la voglia di star dietro a troppi giovani.
Giovio nella Michaelis Angelis vita esagerò come al solito facendomi passare per ‘Tanto rude e selvatico da privare i posteri di discepoli’. Non può essere considerato per caso Daniele da Volterra un mio discepolo? Lo fu eccome oltre ad essere per me un valido supporto nell’arte e nella vita quotidiana, fino all’ultimo respiro, letteralmente.

It is not true that I never wanted to teach my art to anyone. That those who learned my art did not reach the highest peaks in the art of painting or sculpture, that is another matter.

Of course I didn’t like teaching everyone. I didn’t have the time to do it but, to be honest, neither did I have the desire to keep up with too many young people.
Paolo Giovio in Michaelis Angelis vita exaggerated as usual making me pass for ‘So rude and wild as to deprive posterity of disciples’. Could Daniele da Volterra be considered a disciple of mine? He certainly was, in addition to being a valid support for me in art and in daily life, until his last breath, literally.
