L’opera che vi propongo oggi è la Vedova Romana dipinta a olio su tela nel 1874 da Dante Gabriel Rossetti, uno dei fondatori della confraternita dei preraffaelliti.

Il centro della scena è occupato dalla giovane vedova seduta che con le mani pizzica le corde di due lire, riprese dall’arte figurativa pompeiana.

Alle spalle della vedova si vede l’urna in cui sono contenute le ceneri del marito su cui sono scolpite parole in latino.

Fateci caso: nei dipinti preraffaelliti viene data molta importanza alla raffigurazione dei fiori e non è certo una combinazione. Ogni fiore rappresentato ha uno specifico significato che aiuta a leggere il significato dell’opera. Per esempio le margherite evocano l’innocenza e la purezza mentre le viole il ricordo. I papaveri simboleggiano il sonno mentre il finocchio selvatico viene raffigurato come emblema dell’adulazione.

La giovane ritratta con quello sguardo così malinconico è la modella Alexa Wilding. I capelli rossi, ondulati e voluminosi, la pelle diafana, le labbra che sembrano formare un cuore e il collo lungo erano i canoni di bellezza amati dai preraffaelliti e lei, Alexa Widding, era la modella ideale con quella sua sensualità romantica e sfuggente.

Era una sarta molto colta, sapeva leggere e scrivere che ai quei tempi non era così scontato e sognava di fare l’attrice.

Il dipinto della Vedova Romana è abitualmente custodito presso il Museo de Arte de Ponce ma presto arriverà in Italia. Sarà infatti una delle opere presenti in mostra, nel percorso allestito presso le sale del Museo Civico San Domenico a Forlì.

L’esposizione dal titolo “Preraffaelliti, Rinascimento moderno” proporrà al pubblico oltre 300 opere fra dipinti, disegni, sculture, stampe, fotografie ma anche ceramiche, opere in vetro e metallo, gioielli e tessuti per raccontare la nascita e l’evoluzione del movimento artistico nato grazie a un’idea ribelle di William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais e Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Her red, wavy and voluminous hair, her diaphanous skin, her lips that seem to form a heart and her long neck were the canons of beauty loved by the Pre-Raphaelites and she, Alexa Widding, was the ideal model of her with that romantic and sensual sensuality. elusive of her.
